Job Description

A Glimpse of the Job

The Transit Supervisor assists with the daily operations of the campus transit system, monitoring routes, coordinating drivers and buses, assisting customers, supervising charters, and responding to accidents.  Additionally, the Transit Supervisor will directly supervise a group of full-time and student employees and will be responsible for handling, among other things, payroll, evaluations, and discipline.

Field Supervision and Operations

  • Supervises all field activities.

  • Conducts reconnaissance of traffic situations and operational stability to optimize driver movements and efficiency.

  • Assist drivers and customers with inquiries about routes, procedures, and operations.

  • Tracks and replaces missing bus stop signs as necessary.

  • Monitors customer service effectiveness and operational soundness.

  • Assumes ownership of projects to improve service and operations.

Supervision and Administration

  • Supervises and monitors drivers to ensure adherence to State laws, University rules, and Transportation Services policies.

  • Times and spaces out buses.

  • Documents and distribute action forms to drivers and maintains comprehensive Manager’s Notes on all employees.

  • Approves time worked and leave requests for full-time and part-time employees.

  • Inputs all necessary data related to charter assignments, passenger counts, and driver memos.

  • Updates the route board, desktop paperwork, and charter summary sheet to reflect changes in charters, routes, and bus availability.

Coordination

  • Coordinates between the office and field regarding driver shortages, late arrivals, sick calls, workstation abandonment, deployment plans, bus swaps, and other policy issues.

  • Distribute route folders, bus assignments, passenger counts, radios, maps, credit card packets, window signs, and other materials to drivers.

  • Monitors and updates daily logs with information on late drivers, no-shows, abandoned workstations, sick drivers, bus swaps, mechanical issues, and disciplinary matters.

  • Monitor all radio traffic.

Operational Support

  • Oversee activities at the Transit Office and on the lot to ensure smooth operations.

  • Issues vehicles to staff and processes incoming maintenance sheets promptly.

  • Provides charter paperwork to drivers, assigns buses, and ensures accurate completion and processing of paperwork.

  • While serving as the coordination point of contact between the shop, Transit Office, and supervisors in the field, the Supervisor, Transit will handle the following:

  • Inputs all necessary data entry required by management to include charter assignments, passenger counts, driver memos.

  • Updates the route board, desktop paperwork, and charter summary sheet for changes to charters, routes, and downed buses as changes occur.

  • Assigns buses.

  • Processes all incoming maintenance sheets.

  • Issues vehicles to staff for use.

  • Distributes charter paperwork to drivers, informs them of bus assignment, and answers questions.

  • Ensures paperwork is properly completed and processed in a timely manner.

Physical Requirements:

  • May be required to stand and sit for long periods.

  • Ability to walk distances of up to a ½-mile unassisted between bus assignments.

  • Ability to bend and stoop to conduct pre-trip bus inspection.

  • Ability to kneel to secure wheelchair on the bus.

  • Ability to climb limited stairs onto high-floor buses.

  • Must be able to lift and move medium-weight objects, bend, stoop, and assist and/or move people with disabilities as they board/off-board the bus and other campus vehicles.

  • Ability to work outdoors exposed to various weather conditions, potential allergens, elevated noise levels, and heat.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Four years in progressively responsible positions including two years of supervisory and customer service experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrate the ability to operate several types of buses and vans to the extent of maneuvering safely through congested traffic conditions, adverse weather, and road conditions.

  • Exhibit a high degree of mental concentration and independent judgement.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation applications.

  • Ability to handle busy phones, 2-way radio, and office traffic, and to perform time-critical tasks reliably.

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid vehicle operator’s license and good driving record.

  • Must be able to obtain State of Texas class “B” vehicle operator’s license (Commercial Driver’s License with passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement) within 60 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school graduation supplemented by completion of formal or practical vocational training or associate’s degree.

  • Supervisory experience with a transit agency.

  • Valid State of Texas class “B” vehicle driver’s license (Commercial Driver License) with passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement.
