This job assumes responsibility for operation, technical and personnel management related duties for assigned laboratory section(s) and for solving day to day lab operational problems and notifying the Laboratory Manager, Director or Physician Supervisor of problems as appropriate. Maintains a patient/client focused department that complies with the standards of accrediting/regulatory agencies; oversees training and competency testing of all personnel in the department and maintains documentation; performs technical work as necessary; and promotes and ensures compliance with Ochsner Health System’s Laboratory policies, procedures and practices. Maintains confidentiality of patient and personnel related information at all times and exhibits a high degree of processional excellence characterized by sound independent judgment, reliability, initiative, flexibility and a high standard of ethics.

Education

Required - Bachelor’s degree


Work Experience
Required - 3 years experience in appropriate lab under a qualified Medical Director, to include experience working in controlled environment, following safety measures to minimize exposure to chemicals, body fluids, blood borne pathogens, etc.

Preferred - Experience utilizing advanced analytical skills necessary in order to analyze complex data and trouble shoot equipment


Certifications

Required - Cytotechnologist ASCP Registry

Current Louisiana license or temporary license as a Cytotechnologist

Meets CLIA and CAP requirements for testing personnel relative to scope of duties

Any incumbent certified by ASCP on or after January 1, 2004 must successfully complete the requirements of the ASCP’s Certification Maintenance Program
 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally.
  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Judgmental skills necessary in order to identify and resolve problems.

  • Analytical skills necessary to prepare/interpret a variety of management reports, analyze complex data and trouble shoot equipment.

  • Analytical skills to collect data, perform calculations, maintain system logs and operate laboratory computer equipment.

  • Working knowledge of computers, printers and laboratory equipment.

  • Skills to manage stress in order to maintain a professional atmosphere and provide quality service.

  • Self-directed including the ability to work independently.

  • Ability to read and perform basic math calculations.

  • Ability to be available for 24-hour call, work on shifts other than the primarily scheduled shift and work weekends and holidays when deemed necessary by laboratory leadership.


Job Duties

  • Coordinates daily operations.
  • Supervises, trains and develops department staff.
  • Oversee Performance Improvement (PI) & Quality Control (QC) Programs.
  • Ensures fiscal responsibility.
  • Participates in Pathology & Laboratory Medicine (PALM) and departmental projects.
  • Other related duties as required.

Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.   (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible. NOTE: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.

Must have the ability to sit/stand at a counter/bench approximately 2 ½  - 3 ½  feet high for prolonged periods of time with the ability to bend, reach, and stoop while performing various functions and moving about the department.

High level of mental and visual acuity and the ability to discern colors is required. Requires the ability to transport items including, but not limited to, boxes, supplies, reagents, specimen containers and report binders

Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue.


The incumbent works in a patient care area; works in an area where patients enter; works directly with patients; and/or works with specimens that could contain communicable diseases. There may be an occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases.
