The Department of Inflammation & Immunity advances scientific understanding by bringing together a dedicated and collaborative team of scientists at the forefront of immunologic and organ-based research, to deliver impactful translational science that improves the health and well-being of patients at Cleveland Clinic and across the globe. As a Bioinformatics Technologist, you will:  

  • Perform software programming in various languages.  

  • Maintain and run software systems for bioinformatics analysis, including raw data quality control, sequence alignment, variant calling, annotation, and reporting.  

  • Provide input to develop software and data analysis solutions.  

  • Complete department tasks.  

  • Provide ongoing support for existing databases/software.  



The ideal future caregiver is someone who: 

  • Has experience in DNA and RNA sequence data analysis  

  • Has experience with single-cell RNA sequencing data.  

  • Has a bachelor’s degree in systems biology, bioinformatics, computer science or a related field.  

  • Demonstrates a strong work ethic.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists with testing hypotheses.
  • Develops basic statistical, mathematical, and predictive modeling as well as building algorithms and performing data analytics.
  • In collaboration with bioinformatics specialists, maintains and runs, software systems for bioinformatics processing of sequence data, including, but not limited to, raw data quality control, sequence alignment, variant calling, annotation, and reporting.
  • Develops and implements workflows for data analysis tools in collaboration with research scientists.
  • Builds and deploys data analysis support systems for large data sets; e.g., well-structured flat files, APIs, or other types of services.
  • Acquires, cleans, and structures data from multiple sources to ensure data quality.
  • Utilizes process enhancement opportunities to improve efficiency of data pulling, reporting, programming, operation, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Systems Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science or related field (such as Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Business Intelligence).

Complexity of Work:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to participate within a multidisciplinary team of IT professionals, physicians, molecular biologists, computer scientists, and biostatisticians.

Work Experience:

  • Must possess knowledge of conducting data analytics, math or statistical modeling or machine learning.
  • Experience in bioinformatics software.
  • Detailed knowledge of core bioinformatics concepts and skills
  • Proficiency in interpreted languages; Python or Perl preferred.
  • Experience or willingness to learn R for specialized tasks and integration with data analytics workflows.
  • Experience producing useful code (not necessarily in context of employment - personal projects or contributions to open-source projects are applicable).
  • Experience with high performance computing cluster preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in communication/presentation skills.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to perform work in a stationary position for extended periods.
Ability to travel throughout the hospital system.
Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment. 
Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.
