Position Summary

Reporting to the Coordinator, Cultural Services, this part-time position is responsible for the planning and instruction of quality programs, ensuring that all activities are safe, fun and appropriate for the targeted age group and expectations of the department.

Major Job Responsibilities

Program implementation with a focus on quality customer experiences:

  • Ensure a safe and well-supervised learning environment is provided, while encouraging individuals to actively participate

  • Provide participants with a program outline for the season (Older Adult programs)

  • Facilitate a lecture and or demonstration of an assigned topic at each class

  • Ensure daily programming is adapted to all program participant needs

  • Receive all parent/participant (as applicable based on programming) concerns and communicate concerns or incidents to supervisor

  • Provide sufficient time for participants to work independently and provide one-on-one assistance when required

  • Provide guidance and oversight of volunteers

  • Establish positive relationships and clear communication channels with all staff and participants

  • Maintain a safe and clean facility including proper usage and use of equipment. Proactively communicate program needs to facility operations staff and communicate any facility or equipment deficiencies to supervisor.

  • Evaluate situations for potential risks and proactively take action to address such risks. Communicate any action or concerns to supervisor.

  • Maintain communication with customer service desk to provide relevant program updates and to request support in the event of an emergency

  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and handle sensitive situations with mature judgement.

  • Comply with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating guidelines and the Occupational Health and Safety Act

Administrative Tasks:

  • Develop and prepare a material list and lesson plans to meet the needs of the program and participants

  • Modify lesson plans as necessary based on program participant needs

  • Provide lesson plans, regular updates and feedback to immediate Supervisor

  • Attend all mandatory staff functions: training, meetings and all allocated program times

  • Report any accidents, incidents, to the Coordinator, ensuring all appropriate forms are filled out accurately and completed

  • Submit required forms (including payroll)

  • Maintain accurate attendance and other administrative records as required

Education & Experience

  • Secondary School Diploma

  • Minimum of three (3) years teaching/program instruction experience

  • Standard First Aid and CPR C

  • HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development (children’s programs)

  • NCCP required for sports related programming

  • Post-Secondary Education related to specialized field (i.e. visual art, design and/or craft, drama, music, dance) is preferred

  • Early Childhood Education Certificate (children’s programs) is an asset

  • Certifications/workshops in a related field is an asset

  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or equivalent is an asset

  • Strong knowledge and aptitude in a specific area of interest/specialized field (e.g. art history, including contemporary practice, languages, music, dance, wellness)

  • Familiar with a variety of artistic techniques, practices and materials with one or more of the following interests/skills: painting, drawing, ceramics, pottery, hand building, clay sculpture (Visual Art programs only) or drama, music, choreography, dance, theatre (Performing Art programs only)

  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Effective program planning and service delivery skills

  • Experience working with targeted age group and persons with special needs is an asset
