Position Overview:

Finning Canada is seeking a Global Category Specialist to support our Global Category Management team in delivering enterprise‑wide sourcing and value‑creation initiatives. Based in Edmonton, this permanent, full‑time role supports the development and execution of global category strategies across all regions where Finning operates.

The Global Category Specialist works closely with the Global Category Manager to support strategic sourcing activities, supplier engagement, and value analysis, while building strong partnerships with local Procurement teams, business leaders, and global suppliers. This role is ideal for a collaborative, analytically minded procurement professional who thrives in a global environment and is passionate about driving business value through effective category management.

Job Description:

Major Job Functions:

  • Supports the Global Category Manager to create value, drive improvements, and realize savings across the regions in which Finning operates. Executes the global category management strategy that supports the company’s strategy and Global Supply Chain strategy. Provides input and recommendations to the business including:  processes, systems and analysis of overall global spending to identify new opportuniites for savings and efficiencies. This will include various RFx processes as well as contract development and supplier performance management.

  • Develops, grows and maintains trusted and collaborative relationships with regional business partners, contracting team partners, internal stakeholders and suppliers to ensure that Procurement remains as a valued partner, being appropriately involved in business decisions.

  • Identify, develop and maintain relationships with strategic, global and critical suppliers to improve supplier performance and to ensure the most competitive total cost of ownership of goods and services globally is negotiated

  • Develop, implement and drive opportunities to increase utilization of global suppliers through identification, communications, strategic sourcing and progress reporting. This includes supporting the development and accurate use of a tracking and measurement tools.

  • Understand regional procurement procedures, workflows and processes and determine opportunities for improvement and standardization across the organization. In addition, understand and ensure compliance with all applicable regional procurement laws and regulations including tax considerations.

Accountability:

  • Identify and execute process improvements and global standardization initiatives for the categories under his responsibility

  • Execute and deploy long and short term global strategies for the categories under his responsibility.

  • Responsible to build strong relationships with global, strategic and critical suppliers in order to negotiate more innovative and beneficial contractual agreements and service levels

  • Responsible to define and measure relevant key performance indicators for global, strategic and critical suppliers.

  • Participate, as required, in cross functional team meetings to discuss initiatives, assess impact, implementation strategies and contracts mobilization to ensure their effective implementation

Mandatory (Must-Have) Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Supply Chain Management, Business or equivalent experience in a related field

  • Preferred 5 years of experience in procurement, with a focus on category management and strategic sourcing at a regional / global levels
  • Experience with spend analytics tools and/or e-procurement
  • Track record of influencing authority at different levels and executing category management strategies
  • Good understanding and willingness to develop their knowledge of socio-political economics, taxation, accounting principles, the concept of total cost of ownership, strategic sourcing, cost management and process improvement

  • Good understanding of end-to end supply chain management including inventory management and procurement operations

  • Experienced in executing multi-regional or multi-national procurement strategies. Knowledge and awareness of functional interdependencies

  • Strong cost benefit and business analysis abilities

  • Proficient in MS Office applications, intermediate level in Excel and in Enterprise resource systems (ERP), preferably M3

Soft Skills:

  • Positive, “can-do” attitude and customer focused approach, able to deal with challenging situations with integrity, empathy and passion.
  • Proven ability to lead and execute strategic business initiatives and strategic planning
  • Proven negotiations and contract management skills

  • Expertise in strategic sourcing processes (RFx)

  • Comfortable preparing and presenting recommendations to senior level leaders

  • Ability to identify, quantify and effectively mitigate procurement risks

  • Ability to deploy strategies, ensuring the execution of actionable tasks.

  • Ability to assimilate information, evaluate facts, determine alternative solutions to problems, and to reach and communicate sound management and business decisions.     

  • Ability to collaborate and work cross regionally and cross functionally to build trusted relationships with Procurement, technical experts within Finning and Suppliers.

  • Proven project management, planning and organizational skills

  • Analytical skills with the ability to support others to understand market dynamics and business partner needs

  • Takes initiative and displays creativity and innovation in achieving results

  • Presentation, verbal and written communication skills in both English and Spanish

  • Ability to adapt to changing requirements and provide necessary support
