The Malek School of Nursing Professions (MSNP) prepares competent nurses and leaders for successful careers in healthcare. The MSNP offers both online and in-person programs to meet flexible learning needs in our baccalaureate and graduate programs, which include a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), an accelerated second-degree BSN, a Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN), and a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP. The salary range for this position is $65,000 - $73,000 per year.

Essential Functions

  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation the philosophy and objectives of the nursing education program.
  • Collaborate with other faculty members to design, implement, teach, evaluate, and revise the curriculum.
  • Teach online and in-person courses as assigned.
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Assess student learning to support learning, grading, and progression of individual students, as well as program-level assessment to support ongoing evaluation and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to developing student admission, progression, retention, and graduation policies within the MSNP and MU shared governance processes.
  • For faculty teaching in APRN programs, provide direct and indirect clinical supervision of APRN students when needed.
  • Work collaboratively with nursing colleagues and clinical partners
  • Provide service activities to the department, college, and/or university, as well as demonstrate continued engagement with the academic and practitioner community in their field
  • Maintain current licensure and certification
  • Engage in scholarship supporting clinical practice, advancement of the profession, or innovation in teaching and learning, including dissemination of research through peer-reviewed journals and professional conferences.
  • Participate in academic advisement and counseling of students in accordance with requirements of the Financial Educational Rights and Privacy Act (20 USC § 1232g), including respecting rights for privacy, requirements for ongoing training and compliance, and appropriate record-keeping.

Non-Essential Functions

  • Assume professional responsibilities as requested by the Director of MSNP.
  • Engage in and document ongoing professional development in clinical practice, teaching and learning.
  • For faculty directly involved in leading clinical simulation, engage in and document professional development in simulation pedagogy.
  • Maintain evidence of education and experience necessary to indicate that they are competent to teach each assigned course on an ongoing basis.
  • Support the documentation of actions taken in faculty and committee meetings using a systematic plan of evaluation to support program review and evaluation in accordance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Contribute to the University, College of Health and Education, and Malek School of Nursing Professions functions and events, including new student orientation, admissions events, and onboarding, residencies, pinning, and commencement.
  • Other duties and responsibilities are specific to faculty rank and whether a faculty member is tenure/tenure-track. These specific duties and responsibilities are outlined in the Marymount Faculty Handbook.

FACULTY CLASSIFICATIONS AND WORKLOAD DISTRIBUTION

Instructor Track

  • Titles include: Continuing Professor and Visiting Professor
  • Workload Distribution: 95% Teaching, 5% Service
  • Essential job functions include teaching across various formats (online, in-person, clinical labs, and simulation), performing and demonstrating nursing skills, maintaining current clinical practice knowledge through active clinical practice and/or professional development, supervising students in clinical settings, and coordinating courses as assigned. These functions require the ability to perform and oversee direct patient care activities in lab, simulation, and clinical environments.
  • Differential Expectations:
    • Primary focus on teaching excellence across multiple instructional environments, including serving as course coordinators, leading didactic course sections, and actively engaging in hands-on instruction in clinical labs, simulation, and clinical environments
    • Must be able to transition seamlessly between classroom, lab, simulation, and clinical environments
    • Flexibility to adjust teaching assignments based on program needs is required
    • Not eligible for tenure
    • Renewable annual appointments based on satisfactory performance and program needs
    • Evaluated annually

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current license or a multistate licensure privilege to practice nursing in Virginia as a registered nurse without any disciplinary action that currently restricts practice.
  • Every member of a nursing faculty supervising the clinical practice of students, including simulation in lieu of direct client care, shall meet the licensure requirements of the jurisdiction in which that practice occurs and shall provide evidence of education or experience in the specialty area in which they supervise student clinical experience for quality and safety.
  • Master’s degree in nursing, education, public health, or a related field by the date of appointment is required; a doctorate degree is preferred. Faculty with a graduate degree in a field other than nursing must have a bachelors in nursing.
  • Faculty who do not have a graduate degree will be responsible for meeting requirements for an exception to this requirement in accordance with Virginia Board of Nursing (VBON) policies, including providing evidence of enrollment and progression through a graduate program of study.
  • In exception to the above, faculty strictly providing instruction in topics other than nursing shall not be required to hold a degree in nursing or a license as a registered nurse.
  • At least two years of direct client care experience as a registered nurse prior to employment by the program
  • Prior experience teaching at the college or university level, is preferred.
  • Faculty members who supervise clinical practice by simulation shall also demonstrate simulation knowledge and skills in that methodology and shall engage in ongoing professional development in the use of simulation.
  • Evidence of ability to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts through teaching, scholarship, and service.
