Support assigned business unit by providing analysis and counsel on basic legal matters. Attorneys will assist with mitigating legal risks facing M&T, execute corporate policy and positions on legal issues. Attorneys also will conduct research on a variety of legal issues.
May represent the organization in litigation matters.
Participate in the development of departmental policies; review existing law and make recommendations regarding new procedures.
Provide legal advice within area of expertise and answer day-to-day questions.
Draft and review documents to include regulatory disclosures, marketing material and licensing statutes.
Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.
This position is responsible for providing basic analysis and counsel on legal issues for business units supported. Incumbent should be able to guard against legal risks facing M&T, develop and recommend corporate policy and positions on legal issues and conduct research into a variety of legal issues. This position requires interaction with mid-level management.
May provide guidance to more junior staff members.
J.D. from an accredited law school.
New York State or applicable state bar admission.
Ability to identify legal issues, evaluate legal risks, and offer solutions.
Strong negotiation, interpersonal, organizational skills.
Excellent writing, analytical and verbal skills.
Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
Experience with the review and analysis of credit/loan agreement documentation, forbearance agreements, loan modifications, etc. is ideal.
Experience in commercial bankruptcy or workout is preferred.
