The Opportunity

The Payroll Accountant plays a critical role in supporting the payroll team to ensure the timely and accurate processing of payroll across multiple unionized and non-unionized locations. This position is also a key liaison, ensures collaboration and alignment among stakeholders involved in payroll operations.

What You Will Do

  • Process, reconcile, and prepare journal entries for salaried, hourly, and unionized payrolls.

  • Verify the accuracy of all payroll deductions, including taxes, garnishments, and benefit contributions.

  • Develop and prepare management reports highlighting key payroll performance indicators, including timing and accuracy metrics.

  • Lead or support year-end T4 processing, review, and reconciliation activities.

  • Assist with the reconciliation of pension, RRSP, and group benefits plans as required.

  • Produce payroll reports to support internal stakeholders and external reporting requirements (e.g., audits, compliance reviews).

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Accounting or a related field.

  • CPA designation considered an asset.

  • PCP (Payroll Compliance Practitioner) or CPM (Canadian Payroll Manager) certification – or equivalent payroll experience – considered an asset.

  • 5+ years of hands-on, full-cycle payroll experience, including multi-site or Canadian multi-jurisdictional processing and payroll reconciliation.

  • Broad payroll experience within a large, complex, multi-union environment preferred.

  • Experience using Workday, UKG, or other computerized payroll, HCM, or scheduling systems.

  • Strong knowledge of employment standards legislation in Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with strong Excel skills (including pivot tables).

  • Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.

  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on identifying solutions and driving issues to effective resolution.
