Day in the Life of a Medical Laboratory Technologist

  • Receives specimens and performs specimen accessioning, checking specimen adequacy per requirements.

  • Prepares reagents and organizes supplies as necessary.

  • Performs pre-analytic checks and maintenance as necessary or assigned recording inappropriate records.

  • If requested, employee to assist in training of employees (laboratory or client) if a new procedure or specimen requirement change is added to lab test menu.

  • Performs all testing for which there is validation of performance and appropriate skill level.

  • Performs all quality control testing, verifying and result recording.

  • Maintain all required written records, to include records of action taken as necessary.

  • Enter results as appropriate for practice.

  • Store all reagents and supplies; organize the work area as necessary.

  • Perform all necessary and assigned inventory duties.

 

Education and/or Experience:

  • Associate degree and at least 2-3 years experience in a clinical laboratory setting

  • Current MLT ASCP certificate, or equivalent, preferred.
