Your role

This is your opportunity to join our growing Environment and Planning team in Brisbane. Our E&P team sits within our Real Estate and Development Group and is an integral part of Allens' leading Projects, Real Estate & Development practice. Our lawyers work collaboratively with our Real Estate and Projects Practice Groups in Brisbane as well as across jurisdictions, giving our lawyers an opportunity to work on major projects throughout Australia and overseas. We encourage our lawyers to find their niche and specialise in areas they're interested in, while building a strong foundation across their field.

As a member of our Brisbane team, you will report directly to Partner, Bill McCredie and work collaboratively with the broader team. Bill's practice involves a broad range of advisory, transactional and litigious work for clients in the mining, energy,  resources and water sectors, and the property development industry, with a particular focus on the operations and project approvals. As such, you will have the opportunity to support our clients with a range of groundbreaking matters in their environment and planning transactions and development projects.

As an Associate or Senior Associate in our Environment and Planning team you will:

  • Provide strategic planning approval and regulatory advice for projects across a range of industries including mining, energy and renewables, and property and infrastructure developments spanning the residential, retail, commercial, industrial and logistics and aged care sectors.

  • Appear in a range of approval litigation appeals, judicial reviews, land acquisition / valuation proceedings and environmental and planning prosecutions, across a range of jurisdictions including the Planning and Environment Court, Land Court, Magistrates Court and the Federal Court;

  • Undertake due diligence investigations in relation to major transactions in the above sectors in conjunction with Allens' market leading M&A and project financing practices;

  • Advise on contaminated land issues and environmental licensing;

  • Advise on environmental incident response, regulatory engagement, compliance and incident investigations;

  • Advise on bulk water projects including upgrade approvals and environmental assessments, dam safety regulatory approvals and conditioning and emergency actions plans; and

  • Advise on biodiversity conservation including offsets agreements, heritage and environmental protection legislation reforms.

About you

You will have:

  • Experience working in an Environment & Planning team, ideally at a well-regarded top tier firm, international firm, Australian firm or boutique firm.

  • Some experience in E&P matter litigation.

  • A willingness to build an understanding of clients and develop effective working relationships.

  • An ability to effectively manage matters.

  • A willingness to participate in business development activities, such as pitch documents, firm-wide pursuits, article writing, attending industry events and hosting seminars.

  • A desire and ability to grow, both as an Environment & Planning Lawyer and leader.

  • A strong team ethic.

  • An ability to establish a professional profile and internal networks.

  • A desire to learn, grow, network, mentor others.
