Job Title: Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT)
Reports To: Lead Veterinarian Technician or Veterinary Practice Manager
Job Summary:
The Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) is responsible for supporting veterinarians in providing quality medical care to animals, ensuring the health and well-being of patients, and maintaining excellent client communication. This role requires strong technical skills, a compassionate approach, and the ability to work effectively within a team in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Patient Care:
- Assist veterinarians during examinations and procedures.
- Monitor patients pre- and post-surgery, administer anesthesia under the supervision of a veterinarian, and provide post-operative care.
- Perform routine lab work, including blood draws, urinalysis, and other diagnostic tests.
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.
Surgical Assistance:
- Prepare animals and surgical equipment for procedures.
- Ensure a sterile environment by cleaning and maintaining surgical tools and the surgery area.
- Monitor anesthesia levels and vital signs of animals during surgery.
Laboratory and Diagnostics:
- Collect and process lab samples for in-house or external lab analysis.
- Operate diagnostic equipment, including x-ray and ultrasound machines, and ensure images meet diagnostic quality standards.
Client Education and Support:
- Educate clients on preventive care, post-operative care, nutrition, and general pet health.
- Answer client questions and provide information about treatments and procedures.
- Offer compassionate support to pet owners during difficult situations.
Administrative and Recordkeeping:
- Maintain accurate medical records for each patient.
- Communicate with other veterinary staff to ensure seamless care.
- Keep inventory of medical supplies, order when necessary, and ensure the facility remains organized and clean.
Other Duties:
- Participate in team meetings and continuing education to maintain current licensure and knowledge.
- Follow clinic policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
Qualifications:
- Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology.
- Licensure: Current licensure as a Veterinary Technician (LVT) in MI
- Experience: Preferably 1-3 years of experience in a clinical setting, though new graduates with licensure are welcome.
- Skills:
- Proficiency in animal handling, laboratory procedures, and diagnostic imaging.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Compassion for animals and ability to handle difficult situations with care.
Working Conditions:
- Requires the ability to lift animals and equipment (up to 50 lbs).
- May require working evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Exposure to potential hazards such as animal bites and zoonotic diseases.
