POSITION SUMMARY
Fully accountable to develop, deploy and maintain highly effective health and safety programs and processes in automated distribution workspace in accordance with agency/government guidelines and with respect to company culture. Create, communicate and measure safety education, training and total program performance. Establish practices and influence mindsets that reinforce and engage all staff in a culture of well-being and health and safety knowledge and pride.
*This position is onsite at our Distribution Center in either our Portland, OR location or Robards, KY location.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Fully assess, re-tool and govern the Distribution Center’s safety program: in doing so, work collaboratively and cooperatively with DC management team, corporate counterparts in the Risk function, and with employee safety committees
Create strategic, long-term solutions and measurable gains by:
Continually and comprehensively analyze and assess risk and exposure
Provide statistical reporting, using data to make sound recommendations
Address facility hazards to meet OSHA and other requirements
Address trends in employee behaviors, incidents and knowledge gaps
Evaluate, re-tool and implement practices and procedures
Leverage industry best practices and innovations, create key performance indicators
Meet very frequently with operations management teams to present safety briefs and discuss found opportunities
Performs other related duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s Degree with field of study related to Occupational Health, Environmental Safety
8 to 10 years’ experience in Occupational Health & Safety or related
Prefer experience in automated distribution center environment
Expert in meeting all relevant government agency and legal requirements
Proven success in creating and implementing a comprehensive structured safety program with KPIs
Operate professionally, ethically and cooperatively as a member of a highly diverse and collaborative staff
Skilled interpersonal savvy with individuals at all job levels – includes excellent verbal and written communication, coaching techniques, and thought partnership
Proficient use of common computer software, such as Microsoft Outlook and Office suite (PowerPoint, Excel, and Word at minimum)
LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY
This position may have direct reports, and leads and manages processes and programs. This position will also lead, direct, and set guidelines for safety team members.
JOB SCOPE
This role is primarily responsible for supporting a consistent safety process across all Distribution Centers. This role will interact remotely and in person with all staff in each DC, team members in the corporate headquarters, a variety of vendors and external contacts such as local officials, auditors and inspectors.
Independently identify and resolve simple and complex issues
Autonomously initiate and implement creative, sound decisions with all team members
Work involves high visibility and impact with employees and senior staff internally
Manage through errors in judgment which create high degree of potential fiscal and legal exposure
Work is not generally repetitive in nature, requiring ability to prioritize and balance day-to-day with high yield project opportunities
JOB CONDITIONS
Respond resiliently to shifting focus and ad-hoc demands on time, including unforeseen situations that emerge
Work hours may exceed 8 hours per day or require altering routine, such as working a weekend to meet project demands. DC operations vary from a single shift to 24-hour operations, depending on location and production demands.
Travel 10 to 25% domestically
