Senior Counsel, Outdoor & Property (Maternity Cover)   

Reporting of the Role

You will report to the Director of Legal, Outdoor & Group

Overview of job

As Senior Counsel, Outdoor & Property, you will be the go-to legal expert for all property matters in connection with Global’s Outdoor advertising business in the UK & Ireland and its commercial properties. 

You will collaborate with the Director of Legal, Outdoor & Group and have paralegal and trainee support in working on a full range of real estate and commercial legal matters from contracts and disputes to strategic projects. 

This fixed term role (4 days/week) is perfect for a highly skilled property lawyer with commercial legal experience and at least 5 years PQE.

Responsibilities of the role

  • Provide senior level property legal support to the entire Global business. 

  • Be the property law specialist and trusted advisor on contracts and legal issues relating to: 

    • Outdoor advertising partnerships 

    • Outdoor operations, including supplier agreements

    • Global’s commercial property portfolio 

  • Draft and negotiate property agreements (leases and licences), commercial partnership agreements, supplier agreements, and procurement contracts. 

  • Lead for Legal on strategic real estate projects.

  • Advise on disputes and litigation relating to the Outdoor business and property matters.

  • Ensure business activities are conducted in conformity with all applicable laws, regulations, internal policies and procedures. 

  • Supervise and support the development of the Legal team’s trainees and paralegals. 

  • Take decisions as to how to resource and prioritise work in consultation with other stakeholders as needed. Set out clear goals and targets and be accountable for their performance and results. 

  • Prepare templates, processes and policies for Outdoor and property legal matters and deliver training to the business. 

  • Manage external legal spend for your matters in line with budget. 

  • Attend Outdoor and property steering groups and committees and work closely with the Outdoor senior leadership team.

What you will need

  • Experience as an in-house property and general commercial lawyer used to working in a fast paced, dynamic, and ever evolving environment, providing proactive, in depth, concise, clear and commercial advice to the business. 

  • Expertise in advising on, drafting and negotiating property agreements (leases and licences), and property litigation. 

  • An ability to identify and remedy complex legal issues with limited assistance from external legal counsel, possessing foresight, intuition, and a confident approach to managing legal risk. 

  • A high degree of accuracy and exceptional attention to detail.

  • An interest in understanding the workings of the Outdoor advertising business. 

  • Insights about the current property marketplace, through maintenance of strong formal and informal network/relationships. 

  • The ability to influence and build the trust of senior management.

  • Great communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to work in a collaborative and interactive capacity with a variety of stakeholders. The ability to challenge in a compelling and tactful manner where necessary.

  • Confidence, the ability to work independently and be a ’team player’.

  • The ability to set and maintain pace on projects, respond quickly to legal queries, handle multiple simultaneous (and potentially conflicting) tasks and meet tight deadlines.

  • Experience of delivering training to the business and developing other legal knowledge tools.

  • A practical, calm and common sense nature.

  • Professional and efficient working practices with integrity and diplomacy.

  • The ability to be flexible and adapt – not just in working hours but also in approach.

Qualification requirements 

  • Qualified legal practitioner admitted to practice law in England and Wales with a current practising certificate or a qualified foreign lawyer who can be admitted to practice in England and Wales.

  • 5+ PQE lawyer with a focus on commercial property since qualification. 

  • Good academic qualifications in England and Wales or other common law jurisdiction.

  • A strong degree, at least 2:1, or equivalent.
