Principal UX Engineer

Role Summary:

Principal Engineers act as the go-to person and subject matter technical expert for individual products or specific technologies in their domain. In this role, strong understanding of the key business drivers and underlying technologies is key. Principal Engineers drive the definition, agreement and implementation of technology strategy while using industry standards and best practices. Principal Engineers will have extensive, successful experience owning and driving technical requirements, synthesizing technologies and capabilities into scalable products, prioritizing between features, and flair for operational excellence. This person will be responsible for consolidating and delivering a technology roadmap that aligns with the Product that focuses on innovation, optimization and/or modernization on our most critically important projects and investments. Principal Engineers are senior individual contributor roles expected to be an expert in every facet of the Software Development lifecycle, and of all the core tenants of Engineering.  Autonomy, judgement, influence, and leadership skills are essential.

The successful Principal Engineer will be a self-starter comfortable with ambiguity, with strong attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, agile environment. They will drive the long-term technical vision through development of vision documents, definition of business and technology requirements, launch and post-launch measurement often also developing and indirectly leading the functional work of a small team of product engineers. They will also serve as a key player with cross-functional teams in their area, working to align interests, build and implement scalable solutions. They are seen as technical role models and leaders in their space and have an external presence.

  • Initiate and participates in activities that cross Thomson Reuters organizations and business units. 
  • Start and complete highly complex technical projects and participates in development reviews at sub-unit level. 
  • Work on significant and unique issues requiring analysis and evaluation of the situation
  • Act as a technical domain expert, consulting on application and infrastructure development projects to fit them to the strategic direction, architecture and design
  • Present effectively to large and important groups, influences key customers to take action, and negotiates effective solutions between key individuals
  • Recognizes problems in existing designs and recommends remedies/solutions.
  • Technical expertise has major impact on choices affecting a whole sub-Business Unit, function or major product
  • Contribute to the development of wider functional strategies
  • Look for synergies across Business Unit or function and recommends process, product or service improvements
  • Develop innovative concepts, services, technologies or products to address current and future customer requirements

  • Partner with business/ technology leaders and design teams to align application development with the strategic direction of the data center and collaborates with business unit design and data center support teams on the implementation of infrastructure to support applications.
  • Leads the selection, evaluation, and implementation of technology.
  • Participate in the development of standards and patents by collaborating closely with other teams
  • Act as a technical domain expert, consulting on application and infrastructure development projects to fit them strategic architectural direction and design
  • Contribute, influence, or direct a variety of projects concurrently
  • Partner with project manager(s) to incorporate technical dimension to project status reports
  • Interact frequently with senior colleagues and customer representatives
  • Work on the development of new principles and concepts by advancing technology, theories and concepts

  • Lead the selection, evaluation, and implementation of technology solutions. 
  • Participate in the development of standards and patents by collaborating closely with other teams 
  • Leverage relationships with key internal or external customers to create a broad acceptance for ideas and initiatives
  • Interact frequently with peers, senior colleagues and customer representatives
  • May act as an advisor to senior management in area of expertise
  • May informally manage a small team and/or technical experts.
  • Lead functional teams of technical experts and facilitates integration of their work product into complex systems.
  • Help evangelize successful adoption and use of tooling and technologies
  • Communicate solutions, and technology strategy through formal and informal means to business unit executives, technology management, peers and development staff, and other colleagues.
