About The Organization
Product Engineering is a unified team responsible for the engineering of Disney Entertainment & ESPN digital and streaming products and platforms. This includes product engineering, media engineering, quality assurance, engineering behind personalization, commerce, lifecycle, and identity.
Work within one of Disney’s service engineering teams, supporting a variety of backend API services that directly support the Disney+ platform as part of the Growth, Commerce and Identity group. The Billing and Subscription teams are responsible for building and maintaining our Subscriptions, Entitlements, Orders, Invoices and Billing systems which must be scaled to handle high-traffic events like ESPN+ Pay Per Views while also processing the recurring billing cycles for millions of subscribers daily – all while managing the security and reliability of our homegrown systems. As we build out our flexible architecture, the critical contributions of this team will enable our finance/marketing teams to fulfill their vision of growing our subscriber base internationally. Our billing solutions span retail, wholesale and third-party channels and you will collaborate closely with your peers to deliver a world-class solution that processes millions of transactions every day. Job Summary:
As Lead Software Engineer, you will be responsible for leading an engineering squad within the Commerce Engineering organization.
You will be empowered to make technical and architectural decisions, and to influence the roadmap for your squad and the wider team, working in partnership with your peers across Product, Project Management and Engineering.
You will contribute to and be part of an engaging, dynamic and inclusive engineering organization, grounded in scrum and agile practices, CI/CD, great collaboration, functional programming and motivated by a commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
Responsibilities:
Lead the design, development, testing, deployment, and support of stateful microservices and lambdas in a multi-region cloud environment.
Promote and support Agile methodologies such as Scrum, Kanban, and Scrumban by leading regular ceremonies such as stand-up, retrospectives and sprint planning.
Mentor engineers within your squad (and beyond!) to help them improve their technical ability and build their profile within and outside of the organization.
Collaborate with Product Managers, Designers, QA, Operations, and other stakeholders to understand requirements and articulate technical decisions and outcomes.
Basic Qualifications:
Familiarity with at least one of the following Java Virtual Machine (JVM) languages: Java, Scala, or Kotlin.
Cloud experience: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Compute (GCP), or Microsoft Azure.
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with the Scala programming language and popular frameworks such as: Cats, Cats Effect, ZIO, and http4s.
Familiarity with both object oriented programming (OOP) and functional programming (FP) best practices.
Familiarity with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Terraform, and infrastructure as code (IaC) best practices.
Familiarity with Data Engineering, Data Architecture & Infrastructure and Test Engineering.
Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or comparable field of study, and/or equivalent work experience.
Minimum of 7 years related work experience.
