About the Role:

As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you will be responsible for applying knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and practices in general machine design projects that have limited complexity. The main emphasis of this role will be on design, development, and sustainability of consumer products focused on access control. Examples of access control products you could work on include wireless remote controls, garage door openers, gate openers and commercial door openers. In this position, you will support other mechanical engineers in day-to-day tasks and interact, communicate and contribute within a cross functional team environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Mechanical Engineering Interns can expect to do the following:

  • Modify or create low-complexity parts, applying principles of strengths of materials, statics, dynamics, and material science

  • Create component and assembly drawings using Creo

  • Attend meetings, including project status, product demos, and design reviews

  • Work collaboratively as part of a cross-functional team

  • Perform basic stress / strain calculations on components and apply basic FEA analysis

  • Create prototype parts and assemblies to provide proof of concept

  • Participate in basic failure analysis and problem-solving tactics

  • Participate in peer reviews for product design

  • Assist other team members with projects as needed

  • Comply with health and safety guidelines and rules

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, or related field at an accredited college or university

  • Must be able to work at our Oak Brook, IL office (15 miles west of Chicago) or Elmhurst, IL testing lab 3 days a week

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic understanding of plastic injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, and machine design elements

  • Working knowledge of any 3D CAD software, Creo preferred

  • Working knowledge of MS Office products

  • Strong analytical abilities and effective communication skills
