Student, DevOps Monitoring & Platform Developer – Hybrid

The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Summer Student to join the talented team in the Information Management & Technology (IMT) branch. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic environment supporting multiple microservices teams.

As a Student, DevOps Monitoring & Platform Developer, you will work within the Shared Products Services (Release/DevOps) team, where TypeScript is the primary programming language and services are deployed to Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) using ArgoCD and Azure DevOps pipelines.

In this role, you will collaborate closely with the DevOps team to enhance platform monitoring, reliability, and production support. You will gain practical experience by creating a unified production support dashboard that connects application telemetry, including logs, traces, and metrics, with infrastructure performance.

The position requires strong data analytics and data visualization skills, and familiarity with Azure cloud services and monitoring tools such as Grafana is considered a significant asset. This is a great opportunity to develop your technical skills while contributing to critical IT operations at the AER.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Develop efficient, readable, and maintainable code following AER best practices, standards, and DevOps principles.

  • Support microservices teams using TypeScript, Kubernetes, ArgoCD, and Azure DevOps.

  • For DevOps Monitoring: Assist with production support, monitoring and alerting dashboards, log aggregation, metrics instrumentation, and distributed tracing.

  • Apply data analytics and visualization to support platform operations, reporting, and capacity/incident trend analysis.

  • Compile timely, comprehensive, and accurate documentation as requested.

  • Assist with application support tasks as required.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Currently enrolled in third year or above of a Bachelor’s program in Computer Science or a related field.

  • Proficient in TypeScript and familiar with microservices architectures and RESTful APIs; familiarity with GraphQL is an asset.

  • Exposure to AKS (Kubernetes), ArgoCD (GitOps), Azure DevOps (pipelines, repos), and CI/CD concepts.

  • Familiarity with Azure services and monitoring/observability tools, with Grafana is preferred.

  • Experience with automated testing; familiarity with Playwright for end-to-end/browser automation is an asset.

  • Strong data analytics and data visualization skills, including transforming metrics and logs into actionable insights.

  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly, with solid troubleshooting and communication skills.

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and adapting to change.

Additional Information:

  • Proof of enrollment in a registered post-secondary institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.

  • Please include a cover letter / portfolio as part of your application.

  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.

  • Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.

  • If you need accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process, please email [email protected]. Information relating to the need for accommodation and accommodation measures will be addressed confidentially.

What we offer you:

  • Flexible Work Program - hybrid work and flexible hours.

  • Hybrid work - employees may work remotely up to five days per calendar month, with a limit of two remote days per week.

  • Student Cohort Groups - Join vibrant student cohorts for networking, collaboration, and support.
