Job Description
Transformer Lead Mechanical Designer, will be responsible for the design, analysis, and optimization of mechanical components for large power transformers and reactors upto 765 kV class. The role requires deep technical knowledge, project leadership, and collaboration with global, cross-functional teams to ensure design robustness, quality, and compliance with national and international standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Design & Analysis: Lead the basic and detailed mechanical design of transformer components and auxiliary systems (e.g., tanks, cooling systems, piping, structural elements, active part). Perform advanced stress analysis using FEA and other simulation tools.
- Project Leadership: Manage and execute complex work packages, define scope plans, organize design reviews, and ensure timely release of engineering documents, manufacturing drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOM).
- Problem Solving & Quality: Drive quick and complete root cause analysis (RCA) of field failures, quality issues (NCR, SDR), and implement corrective actions. Apply Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) to mitigate risks and enhance design robustness.
- Collaboration & Mentoring: Work closely with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, sourcing, quality, and customers to resolve technical challenges and improve processes. May coach and mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance. Ability to collaborate with central R&D team for various critical projects is a must.
- Innovation & Standards: Lead New Product Introduction (NPI) and cost-out programs, assess new technologies, and ensure designs comply with national and international standards (IS, IEC, ISO, IEC, IEEE) and internal technical guidelines.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience: Minimum of 15 years of proven experience in mechanical design, specifically within the Large Power transformer and reactors. Extensive knowledge of transformer manufacturing processes is essential.
- Technical Tools: Proficiency with 3D CAD software (e.g., Inventor, AutoCAD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools.
- Attributes:
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work autonomously and manage activities in a multi-cultural, global environment.
- Strong focus on safety, quality, and continuous improvement (Lean principles).
- Willingness to travel to manufacturing sites, customer locations, and industry events as required.
