Purpose of the Role
The purpose of the Site SHE Engineer is to lead the deployment of the Corporate SHE strategy and any specific SHE operational requirements within the site with the primary objectives being eliminating accidents/incidents and ensuring regulatory compliance
This role reports to the Plant Manager with a dotted line to the relevant BU Head of Health and Safety and is responsible for deploying the SHE improvement strategy in addition to reacting to any issues that negatively affect the SHE performance within the plant.
The role holder will be the subject matter expert for all safety, health and environmental matters and will act as the conduit between the Corporate SHE function & Local Operational Leadership teams and be a proven completer finisher and self-starter capable of leading by example, influencing behaviours, improving safety culture and delivering results.
Major Job Functions & Tasks
- To lead the SHE agenda deployment within the plant and in doing so deliver a positive impact on SHE key performance and sustainability indicators.
- Effectively manage, coach and support members of the management/operational teams within the plant.
- Implement the required strategy to achieve and maintain regulatory compliance within their area of responsibility.
- In conjunction with the Head of Environment, the BU Head of Health and Safety and BU Operations Leadership, deploy a strategy to introduce the Alkegen Global SHE standards into the plant.
- Work closely with their operational colleagues to address any SHE issues identified within the plant within agreed timescales.
- Mentor / coach Operational Leadership Team on elements of the Alkegen Leadership & Engagement initiatives in order to assist them in improving the safety and sustainability culture at their respective plant.
- Manage the Product Stewardship Program for the plant and work closely with Occupational Hygiene colleagues to identify risk within the organisation as part of fibre / dust monitoring program.
- Conduct Global SHE Audits across their area of responsibility, develop plant specific improvement plans to address any issues identified during the audit program and manage action closure through to completion.
Major Job Function & Task Delivery Enablers
- Develop adaptable and strong relationships with the Corporate SHE, BU Operations Leadership Team and other support functions within the organization to create and continually improve local safety/environmental culture and performance.
- Support and work closely with the Leadership teams in relation to planning, reviewing and achieving safety, health and environmental objectives and targets as well as promote continuous improvement and development throughout.
- Leverage relationships with members of the Corporate SHE teams and discuss common gaps in the management system as identified by the Internal Audit before developing bespoke solutions that address the gaps.
- Acts as a role model for safety, demonstrating an open leadership and communication style to all levels of the organization to ensure that safety is at the forefront of all staff members’ thoughts in every working day.
- Perform an integral role in the effort to eliminate, prevent, or reduce the occurrence of SHE issues and facilitate the development of safe behaviors, attitudes and a safety culture that supports the goals of the organizational SHE programs.
- Ensure that and Safety/Environmental events within their area of responsibility are investigated and implement the Alkegen communication strategy to ensure that learning from those events are effectively shared with all relevant stakeholders in the business.
- Measure the safety and sustainability performance within their area of responsibility and develop programs of work to address notable trends.
- Measure adherence to the internal audit schedule and support closure of non-compliance elements confirmed by the audit program.
- Identify the health, safety and environmental training needs for the organization.
- Support CAPEX projects from a SHE perspective.
- Drive consistency in relation to SHE best practice across their area of responsibility.
Qualifications & Experience
To enable the role holder to provide advice and guidance to all elements of the organisation the following qualifications are required:
- A globally recognised qualification in or demonstrable experience of Occupational Health and Safety.
- A globally recognized qualification in or demonstrable experience of Environmental Management.
To enable the role holder to be effective it is essential that they have demonstrable experience of the following:
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in SHE management.
- Interaction with nationally specific regulators, in particular hosting site visits and reporting of significant events.
- Extensive knowledge of incident management including emergency response provisions and a natural desire to learn, improve and apply varied problem-solving techniques.
- Involvement in cultural change program within a multi-site organisation.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Ability to achieve results and drive accountability through an influencing rather than directing approach.
- Ability to collaborate on a regional level, think pro-actively and take initiative on safety related issues whilst driving accountability within the organisation.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft software.
