The Phlebotomist IV is responsible for independently performing standard laboratory venipuncture and capillary collection procedures from assigned inpatients and outpatients, labeling the specimens completely and accurately, and transporting specimens to the appropriate location in the laboratory. The Phlebotomist IV will provide training as needed. Coordinates and directs daily phlebotomy activities throughout the department. A Brief Overview
The Phlebotomist IV is responsible for independently performing standard laboratory venipuncture and capillary collection procedures from assigned inpatients and outpatients, labeling the specimens completely and accurately, and transporting specimens to the appropriate location in the laboratory. The Phlebotomist IV will provide training as needed. Coordinates and directs daily phlebotomy activities throughout the department. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

What you will do
  • Independently and correctly performs venipuncture and capillary collections without requiring support and instruction from others.
  • Accessions specimens into the computer and distributes to the appropriate department as required.
  • Ensures referral specimens are processed and stored appropriately to maintain acceptability for testing and trains other staff on acceptable processes.
  • Provides training to new hires, students and other associates on all collection and processing procedures.
  • Provides direction and clarification to inquiries from associates and providers within and outside of the lab. Assists with problem solving and problem resolution and assists with quality projects as needed.
  • Actively participates in regulatory preparation and inspections and assists with quality initiatives and quality monitoring.
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for self-development and enhancement of professional competency.
  • Understands, supports, and applies departmental/hospital policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Performs other job functions as assigned or requested.

Education/Formal Training Requirements
  • Required - High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Preferred - Technical Degree or Diploma Phlebotomy

Work Experience Requirements
  • Required - Phlebotomy 3-5 years

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Proficient in laboratory venipuncture and capillary collection procedures.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of barcode label equipment, basic printers and copiers.
  • Demonstrable leadership potential. Ability to lead others through processes and training steps.
  • Proven record of providing excellent customer service both internally and externally.
  • Ability to perform basic calculations such as needed to calculate maximum blood collection
  • Ability to solve problems and assist others to think through problems and arrive at logical conclusions.
  • Ability to multi-task and logically organize thoughts and tasks to reasonably determine which tasks should be performed in logical order for best outcomes.
  • Ability to organize and carry out assigned projects to conclusion.
  • Ability to work under pressure to complete projects within time limits.

Supervision Provided by this Position
  • Leads and oversees the daily activities of phlebotomists.

Physical Demands
  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
