Description

Rex is a private, not-for-profit hospital affiliated with the UNC Health Care System. The hospital consists of 660 beds including a heart center, family birth center, cancer center, convalescent care center, adult care center, and wellness center.  The main campus has approximately 40 anesthetizing sites including 24 main operating rooms, 6 procedure rooms, 3 OB suites, 6 procedure rooms and a variety of out of department locations (EP, TAVRs, Hybrid MRI).

The APRN in the Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) Clinic plays a critical role in the preoperative care of patients scheduled for cardiovascular and other surgical procedures. Working collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, cardiologists, and the perioperative care team, the APRN is responsible for evaluating and optimizing patients' health status prior to surgery. This includes conducting comprehensive preoperative assessments, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, identifying perioperative risks, and coordinating necessary medical clearances to ensure safe and effective surgical outcomes.

Rex Hospital is a 609-bed metropolitan hospital and serves the flourishing and lively Raleigh, NC community. The Anesthesia Department is composed of approximately 30 anesthesiologists, 80+ CRNAs and has an affiliation with the UNC Greensboro School of Nurse Anesthesia. We practice in a care team model in a collegial atmosphere that allows us to effectively care for our patients in 25 subspecialties, including General, Ortho, Neuro, EP, Vascular, Thoracic, Cardiac, Bariatrics, Endoscopy, OB, Ophthalmology, and limited pediatrics.

Responsibilities

  • Perform thorough preoperative evaluations for patients scheduled for cardiovascular and general surgeries.
  • Obtain detailed medical histories, perform focused physical exams, and assess current medications and allergies.
  • Order, interpret, and evaluate laboratory results, EKGs, imaging, and specialty testing (e.g., stress tests, echocardiograms) as clinically indicated.
  • Identify and manage comorbidities and medical conditions that may impact anesthesia or surgical outcomes.
  • Collaborate with anesthesiology, surgery, cardiology, and primary care providers to obtain medical clearance or further workup as needed.
  • Develop and implement individualized preoperative care plans and provide patient education related to procedure preparation, medication management, and perioperative instructions.
  • Document all assessments, plans, and communications in the electronic medical record (EMR) in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Support optimization of perioperative workflows, contribute to quality improvement initiatives, and ensure compliance with institutional protocols and national guidelines.
  • Serve as a resource and clinical expert for nursing and ancillary staff in the PAT clinic.

Requirements

  • Master’s or Doctorate in Nursing (MSN or DNP) from an accredited program
  • Current APRN licensure in North Carolina with certification as a Nurse Practitioner (e.g., FNP, AGACNP, ANP)
  • National certification through AANP, ANCC, or equivalent body
  • BLS and ACLS certification
  • Minimum 2 years of advanced practice experience, preferably in cardiology, internal medicine, perioperative, or pre-op setting
