Design Engineer – Drivetrain Gear and Spline Engineer

Job Scope:

This Design Engineer position is required to contribute to regional and global engineering programs related to Gear and Splined Components. Candidate is expected to Design, develop, build, and implement new component designs and/or technologies. Part families in this category include but are not limited to Spur, Helical, Bevel, Epicyclic gears, Splined Components, etc in Transmission and Axles.  Scope of this role includes NPI, NTI, CPI, Design Maintenance and NSI (Support) for these component families. Candidate will be required to support the duties of a Global Design Control Delegate for the above part families

Job duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to Design Control Delegate to Design, Develop and Maintain Axle / Transmission Gears and Splined components.
  • Perform necessary Engineering Calculations to design a component using various tools not limited to FEA, CFD, Space Claim, GD&T and Tolerance Stack up, Inertia/Torque Load Analysis, Spline Calculations, B1/B10 Life Calculations, Duty Cycle, Material & Heat Treatment Selection, Tribology, Should-cost, etc to finetune the component design
  • Functional Knowledge on Axle/Transmission Interfaces like Differential, Planetary Drives, Cooling/Lubrication Lines, Transfer Gear Groups and Pump Drive Groups
  • Should have working knowledge of Forgings and Steel Making, Forging Simulation, Machining/Grinding Techniques, DFA/DFM/DFS, etc
  • Should have working knowledge on Part Development Activities like PPAP, APQP, Part Development Validation Plans, etc. Works with SDE to review and approve PPAPs for component
  • Works with SDEs/Buyers and Supplier to complete CPPD and TFC before finalising New Designs and/or Changes
  • Should have working knowledge on Siemens Teamcenter (PLM) activities for managing Drawing Changes and Release
  • Should have working knowledge on DFMEA and DVP&R activities
  • Expected to conduct Design Reviews with SMEs/Peers to validate new designs/changes
  • Expected to run Cost/Benefit analysis to rationalise design changes and participate in cost roll-up/make-buy decisions for supporting purchasing activities
  • Must have working knowledge on Metrology practices using various manual & automatic instruments not limited to CMM/GMM, Surface Testers, Profile Projectors/Contour Tester, DIN/AGMA Stds, etc
  • Must be an adept technical communicator who can work with process partners on a regular basis including but not limited to engaging with Design Control, Platform teams, Modelling / Detailing teams, Purchasing Teams, Mfg Engrg and Factory Operations, etc to convey the Design Intent.
  • Works with the above process partners to provide disposition to Engrg Part Deviations to support unhindered production and also to support Engrg queries from both Supplier and Customer
  • Work on NPI/NTI projects, translate VOC to New Designs that meet/exceed customer expectations and Product Groups’ expectations on Life/Cost
  • Work on CPI projects to address field failure issues by identifying design root causes and brainstorm design solutions that meet/exceed project goals
  • Expected to participate in Sourcing Decisions along with Purchasing teams based on data & facts approach on quality history of current suppliers and KPI of proposed suppliers

Educational Background: 

Requires an accredited Mechanical or Automobile Engineering Degree, with 12 plus years of relevant experience and have exhibited ability to work on complex design projects.

Required Experience/ Skills:  

·Creo Parametric or equivalent parametric Modelling Software

  • ROMAX / KISSsoft or equivalent FEA Software
  • Siemens Teamcenter or equivalent PLM Software
  • Microsoft Office 365

Desired Experience/ Skills:  

  • Six Sigma Green/Black belt with good understanding & experience with DMAIC methodology of problem solving.
