Job Description Summary

The Dive Safety Officer (DSO) develops and implements a comprehensive diving safety program compliant with federal regulations pertaining to health and safety of diving set forth by the Department of Labor in the Occupational Safety and Health Standards, Title 29 Code of Federal Regulations Part 1910 and the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) consensus standards. The DSO administers the University's Dive Control Board for all scientific diving activities and provides leadership and expertise, and authority over the scientific diving operation and the identification and management of risks. The DSO supports additional campus programs by providing technical, regulatory, records management and teaching services to the colleges/schools and departments who have a shared responsibility for operational accountability and regulatory compliance, including support to faculty, staff and student SCUBA diving activities. This position works in conjunction with other Environmental Safety, Sustainability & Risk and Office of Research Safety staff to integrate all technical program services within a consistent "research safety" framework. This position supports the overall Academic and Laboratory Research programs.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

• Experience: One (1) year of professional administrative or coordinator experience.

• Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of best practices in organization, administration, and customer service.
• Knowledge of proper protocol in dealing with confidential information.
• Skill in oral and written communication.
• Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products.
• Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
• Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community.

Additional Job Details

Preferences:

  • 5 years experience as a diving instructor including a broad experience in technical diving.
  • Experience in scientific and research diving operations.
  • •Maintains the qualifications as an AAUS certified diver
  • Diver Alert Network CPR instructor certification
  • Experience as a scuba service technician
