QUALIFICATIONS
Must be 18 years of age and have a HS Diploma or equivalent. The Metal Conditioner must be able to read temperature gauges and heat-treat charts for heat-treating and washing operation.  The employee must make routine adjustments and measurements.  The Metal Conditioner must possess basic arithmetic and must perform calculations to complete order sheets and material completion cards.  He/she must be able to read the operating manual on Vapor Degreaser.  This employee must be learn/know how to add chemicals to the tanks on a daily basis, in accordance with Q.C. requirements. The employee must be able to make quality judgments on parts being removed from, washing, pickling, passivating and stripping operations.  Through use of test titration records furnished by Quality Control Inspection Department, judge’s potency and proper levels of solutions to ensure effectiveness of cleaning operation by adding chemicals as needed.  This employee must be capable of determining when the Still should be cleaned. Job duties require pulling, pushing, and jerking electric hoists into positions over and around heat treating ovens, degreasing machines and cleaning tanks.  The employee must use hands to individually load parts in many cases, or use shovels to load small parts at any one time. The Metal Conditioner must remain alert on the job.  There are numerous parts that are processed each shift which requires attention to parts identification, timers, constantly changing priorities and recordkeeping.  Multiple operations are being performed simultaneously.  

DUTIES

• Using a variety of methods, shovels, hands, tow motors, etc., loads and unloads washing baskets with metal parts. Degreases, washes, pickles, and strips parts by using a power hoist to raise and lower the baskets into the heated tanks containing alkaline, water, phosphoric, nitric and sulfur acid and rust inhibitor.
• Operates heat treat equipment by loading and unloading bins with metal parts, and by use of a moveable power hoist, lifts baskets into and out of ovens.  Sets correct temperature according to type of part, removes bins, and submerse parts into water before placing them into heat treating oven.
• Operates Vibratory Finisher by loading correct amount of media from measured hopper into machine.  Control settings must be made for soap, water, and process time for various parts to be finished.  The machine processes and unloads parts automatically in dry off machine.  Some larger parts must be loaded by hand and turned to prevent media carryover.
• Operates Vapor Degreaser and Still by opening and closing valves to clean parts according to operating manual.
• Loads and unloads by hand Vapor Degreaser basket and ensures its proper operation by checking the level of degreaser solution.
• Through use of material handling equipment, weighs parts on scale to determine count (quantity) for move tickets.
• Checks temperature of various solutions with thermometer.
• Using test titration records furnished by Quality Control Inspection Department as a guide, adjusts dip tank solutions to proper strengths and levels.
• Uses steam gun to clean flow bins.
• Occasionally operates a lift truck to move parts in finishing area or when material handler is not available.
• Notifies Pollution Control, and works closely with them regarding disposal of chemical solutions.
• Performs housekeeping and other related duties as may be assigned by Supervisor.

• Spill management and clean-up.
• Air shutoff locations.
• Capability to follow satellite accumulation rules and requirements.
• Proficiency to recognize hazardous wastes in your area and manage properly.
