Facilities Projects Project Controls Specialist (Contract Role), Calgary

If you are an expert in Project Controls and Cost Controls for major projects and are seeking a new role in a dynamic team, then we want to hear from you!  The MEG Energy Facilities Projects team is expanding with an opportunity for an energetic self-starter who is looking to take on a critical role in directly supporting the business through the preparation, maintenance and continuous improvement of our Project Controls development, control and reporting.  If you are a forward-thinking individual looking to for a new and exciting opportunity, taking on a role that will offer significant growth and learning while continuously improving processes and polices, then this is the role for you!

*Please note, this role is a 12-month contract position with opportunity for renewal and compensation as a straight hourly rate*

Your day-to-day will include:

  • Provide and demonstrate safety leadership in accordance with MEG programs, inspiring and motivating others to ensure safety in all activities and taking care of themselves and others.
  • Champion the Project Controls and Cost Control functional activities associated with large and small projects including:
    • Track and report budgets, changes, trends, potentials, current budget, forecast and variances to budget.
    • Collect, Verify, and compile actuals, incurred, committed cost, progress, including cost investigation to ensure data quality.
    • Calculate and report productivities, performance, earned value and variances.
    • Identify the areas of concern and potential impact on project financial performance. Report on unfavorable variances to aid the management decision-making and corrective plans.
    • Work closely with various contractors, review their reporting to ensure MEG reporting accurately reflects the state of the project.
    • Monthly review of remaining work to go and produce time phased forecasts and graphing.
    • The development and review of detailed and summary level cash flows.
    • Compiling and reporting monthly outlooks to MEG corporate financial group ensuring capital spend forecasts and accruals are accurate and timely.
    • The tracking of weekly labour costs to ensure spending is kept within budget, making adjustments where appropriate.
  • Ensuring that all aspects of cost control are implemented correctly.
  • Perform other related functions as may be required by the Project Controls Manager such as additional scope analysis, ad hoc reporting, and assisting other areas in project controls function.
  • A successful track record of accurately recording, analyzing, interpreting, and forecasting cost data for large and small projects.
  • You will build and maintain respectful and collaborative professional relations with other groups such as Operations and Maintenance, Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Finance, Accounts Payable, Sub-Contractors, or other internal MEG groups and stakeholders.
  • You will be part of the MEG team committed to performing all our activities in an ethical manner, consistent with MEG’s corporate policies.

What you will bring to MEG:

  • 7+ years of directly related experience in project controls and Cost Controls.
  • Post-secondary education with a technical diploma or bachelor’s degree from an accredited university. 
  • Project management certification or formal training in cost control is an asset.
  • Strong working knowledge and experience with Project Controls functions and processes including planning and scheduling, cost estimating, cost control, change management, project finance and accounting processes and systems is desired.
  • Excellent written and oral communication as well as strong presentation skills and the ability to efficiently manage multidiscipline meetings is required.
  • Excellent computer skills working with MS office and expert level in Excel is required.
  • Working knowledge of industry standard cost control software specifically Prism Project Manager, LEM systems, and progress tracking systems is a strong asset.
  • Strong analytical abilities including gathering and interpreting information from multiple sources, organizational and problem-solving skills are required.
  • You take initiative are a self-starter, pro-active and flexible work style and the ability to work with minimal supervision is required.
  • This position may require travelling to site periodically or to EP offices.
