Ambulatory Surgical Unit Assistant - Cole Eye

Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye’s surgical facility is designed to have all preoperative testing in one location and has 5 operating rooms that incorporate the latest equipment to perform safe and effective eye surgery. 


A caregiver in this position works 7:00am3:30pm. 


A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Participate in the delivery of patient care at the direction of an RN.  

  • Transport patients of all ages within the procedure area.  

  • Stock equipment and supplies.  

  • Sanitize and clean the ORs. 

  • Escort preoperative patients to their bed space and assist with the preoperative preparation of the patient by orienting the patient and family to the unit, labeling and securing patient belongings, completing vital signs and Accucheck, and other tasks as assigned by RN.  

  • Perform a variety of technical tasks, including set up of IV infusions, application of heat or cold, enemas, application of external monitoring devices and removal of urinary catheters, peripheral IVs or NG tubes. 

  • Assist the RN with exams and moving and positioning the patient. 

  • Assemble and clean equipment. 

  • Remove all medical and regulated waste. 

  • Perform decontamination, instrument inspection, instrument assembly, and sterilization of equipment. 

  • Select appropriate sterilization method and packaging for processing of equipment. 

  • Perform and monitor the sterilization processes used in the procedural areas and complete logs as appropriate. 

  • Utilize the instrument tracking systems to monitor equipment and document work completed. 

  • Perform basic case cart assembly. 

  • Maintain transportation logs. 

  • Escort patients at discharge. 

  • Transport properly labeled and packaged specimens as directed. 

  • Transport broken equipment, along with completed requisitions, to the designated location for pick-up. 

  • Pick up and deliver tables. 

  • Check expiration dates of solutions and medication and update documents monthly. 

  • Assist with maintaining equipment control, replacing parts, sending equipment for repair and obtaining loaner equipment. 

  • Complete three months of on-the-job training to become familiar with specific department procedures, medical terminology, equipment and sterilization procedures.  

  • Complete basic competencies and Level A CPR certification within the probationary period.  


Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High school diploma or GED.  

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).  


Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • Bachelor of science in nursing (BSN).  

  • One year of experience in a healthcare or related environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects.
  • Requires a full range of body motion pulling, lifting, pushing, and transferring patients to and from various apparatus.
