About the Role

In this role, you will be a key technical Scientist within Special Haematology, delivering high-quality pathology services with a primary focus on Flow Cytometry. Beyond flow cytometry this position offers valuable opportunities to broaden your expertise through cross-training in Cellular Therapy, Haemoglobinopathy and Molecular Haematology, providing diverse technical exposure. As one of the team members, you will contribute to technical advancement, quality improvement, and service optimisation initiatives, while ensuring compliance with current Australian Standards and departmental and hospital policies.
 

Classifications for this position will range from classification range RY4 - RY7 ($94,582.8 - $1,06906.8 per annum)

Duties

  • Lead daily operations of the Special Haematology Laboratory including workflow coordination, routine service delivery and on-call participation.

  • Oversee the performance of internal/external quality control, audits and continuous improvement activities.

  • Oversee the performance of inventory management including stock control and stocktakes.

  • Oversee the performance of equipment maintenance including internal/external checks and troubleshooting.

  • Train, mentor and assess staff competency.

  • Maintain and review documentation.

  • Lead the development, validation and implementation of new assay and equipment.


Your Contribution (Qualifications, Skills and Experience)

  • Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Applied Science or equivalent qualification

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in Flow Cytometry.

  • Experience in Cellular Therapy, Haemoglobinopathy, and Molecular Haematology testing desirable; training will be provided for suitable candidates.

  • Excellent communication, analytical and problem-solving skills.

Grade 2 Medical Scientist, Special Haematology will assist the Special Haematology Senior Scientists in all aspects related to cellular therapy, flow cytometry, haemoglobin electrophoresis, molecular haematology and associated testing to provide efficient, safe and high-quality service.

POSITION DUTIES

Provides high quality, accurate and timely results

  • Act as Deputy to the Grade 3 Scientist, Special Haematology laboratory as required.

  • Attend meetings as a representative of the Special Haematology area of the Haematology department as directed by the Grade 3 and 4 Scientist, Scientist Haematology or Principal Scientist [Haematology] and prepares/provides accurate and timely reports as required.

  • Perform basic cell processing procedures relating to the provision of haemopoietic progenitor cells and cellular products and related services employing aseptic technique. 

  • Perform calculations and meticulously record details of all procedures with attention to batch numbers of critical consumables by completing all relevant paperwork/worksheets.  Participate in the collection and storage of information and data relating to the patient, product, processing, storage, transport and fate of all products.

  • Participate at infusion of HPC products.

  • Participate in routine maintenance of the cryopreservation facility and equipment and general housekeeping duties as outlined, but not limited to the Procedures and Technical instructions manual and as directed by the Senior Scientist in Charge. This includes regular filling and maintenance checks of liquid nitrogen storage tanks and their alarms, and the maintenance of a safe working environment, especially in relation to the safe handling of liquid nitrogen

  • Participates in flow cytometry testing including set up, performance, analysis and reporting.

  • Participates in haemoglobinopathy/thalassaemia testing including set up, performance, analysis and reporting.

  • Participates in molecular haematology testing including set up, performance, analysis and reporting.

  • Participate in clinical trial activities.

  • Participate in relevant aspects of quality control and quality improvement activities including training, document review and inventory and equipment control.

  • Undertake tasks allocated and ensures that outcomes are achieved within specified time frames.

  • Other duties as directed by the Senior Scientist in charge and the Principal Scientist of Haematology, including but not limited to participation in General Haematology testing and workflow.

  • investigates/prosecutes customer complaints to resolution, referring matters on where appropriate.

Communicates with other staff on matters relating to the efficient running of the laboratory

  • contribute to weekly housekeeping meetings as required

  • participates in Departmental discussions 

  • consults with the senior scientists and medical staff on procedural and diagnostic matters

  • Observes departmental structure and lines of responsibility

  • Computer literacy including good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and ability to learn other IT software systems.
