Position Summary
This position is responsible for educating borrowers of their financial responsibility, assessing borrower ability to pay, implementing specialized repayment plans and benefits for Washington University student loans and other specialized loan programs. Loan programs include a variety of specialized Institutional student loans, Partners in Education with Parents (PEP) loans, unpaid student account collections, and remaining Federal Perkins loans through program closeout.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provides consistent and self-motivated soft collection solutions to borrowers, students, parents, alumni, and internal partners in an ever-changing economic market. This includes proactive and timely communication, administering pertinent and timely negotiated program and account terms, and educating borrowers on an innovative selection of loan account repayment, forgiveness, deferment, forbearance, and cancelation benefit options while adhering to and ensuring compliance with federal regulations and departmental policies. Provides validation of loan amortization on existing loan accounts, performing “what if” analysis as needed to impact future payments and interest as negotiated with borrower. Performs independent decision-making and exception solutions as necessary beyond established guidelines. Escalates issues and proposes resolutions.
- Responsible for validation and resolution of ongoing portfolio exception reports for institutional student loan programs, taking appropriate action towards continued improvement of default risk factors to positively impact open receivable trends.
- Manages monthly processes to close paid in full and overpaid accounts, confirm timely billing, and ensure accurate reporting to National Credit Bureaus by UAS (vended loan servicer). Accepts incoming payments for loan accounts, complete loan verification for consolidations, and perform routine account inventory of account placements with outside collection agencies. Position is required to possess a working knowledge of accounting principles in order to execute a variety of complex Workday FDM and Student financial transactions, such as preparing cash sales, supplier invoices, ad hoc payments and journal entries to Workday Finance general ledger accounts.
- Consistently provides service-oriented communication to colleagues and internal partners across the university, exercising a strong ability to forge relationships. This includes continuous partnership and education of internal partners. Requires industry expertise and experience with standard truth-in-lending requirements, acceptable loan product terms, calculation of amortization adjustment options, and a firm understanding of billing and collection procedures. This position maintains a network of internal contacts in student accounting, financial aid, graduate and undergraduate school offices, and with specialized loan program partners across the University.
- Ensures proper tools and procedures are used to locate current accounts to contact current borrowers. Ensure proper credit reporting and adjustments on all current and delinquent accounts to the National Credit Bureaus. Works closely with team members to understand current internal processes, documents and maintains procedures and processes, and recommends updates to policy and procedures with a continual effort to create efficiencies where possible.
- Responsible for maintaining a deep understanding of the collections industry landscape and continually evaluating existing collection guidelines to remain in accordance with Federal regulations and internal WashU / Collection Services policies. Adheres to Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) guidelines including but not limited to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). Additional Federal regulations include but not limited to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA).

Salary Range
$49,700.00 - $82,100.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
