The Farber Institute for Neurosciences at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University is recruiting Board-Certified or Board-Eligible Nocturnists in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine to join a growing, academically focused hospitalist team. This role supports the medical co-management and consultative care of neurosurgical patients as clinical faculty within the Farber Hospitalist Division of the Department of Neurological Surgery.
This is an excellent opportunity for physicians interested in complex inpatient medicine, interdisciplinary collaboration, and academic engagement—without ICU management responsibilities.

Job Description

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide overnight medical cross-coverage and consultative care for neurosurgical patients
  • Manage 15–30 cross-coverage patients per night
  • Handle approximately 4–6 new patient encounters per shift (admissions and consults)
  • Participate as team leader during code blue and rapid response events
  • Collaborate closely with neurosurgery, neurology, APCs, residents, and interdisciplinary teams
  • No ICU patient management responsibilities

Schedule

  • Nights: 182 shifts annually
  • Typical structure: 7-on / 7-off rotating schedule

Team & Support Structure

  • Dedicated APP support for spine services during weekdays
  • No assigned house staff; close collaboration with residents, APCs, and learners across the hospital
  • Occasional medical students rotating on daytime electives

Procedures

  • Procedures (e.g., central line placement) are occasionally available but not required
  • NG tube placement required on occasion

Faculty Development & Academic Opportunities

  • Pre-operative assessment and peri-operative medical optimization
  • Quality improvement and patient safety initiatives

No prior expertise in neurology or neurosurgery is required.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO

  • Strong inpatient medicine and clinical decision-making skills
  • Comfort leading emergency response teams
  • Interest in teamwork, teaching, quality improvement, and patient safety
