RMIT is seeking a highly capable Senior Technical Officer – Teaching & Research to support world-class teaching and research across the College of Design and Social Context.

This is not a passive lab role. You’ll be hands-on, visible, and critical to ensuring our specialist facilities run safely, efficiently, and at a high standard. If you can’t operate across multiple labs, manage stakeholders, and solve problems on the fly—this role will expose you quickly.

You’ll be embedded within the Facilities & Technical Services team, delivering specialist technical expertise across teaching, research, and industry engagement activities.

You will:

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of specialist labs (chemistry, dye, conditioned labs, and material testing environments, including the flash-fire manikin and materials laboratory, FLAMME)

  • Provide expert technical support to staff, students, and researchers

  • Manage equipment, instrumentation, and lab readiness for teaching and research delivery

  • Lead inductions, training, and compliance activities aligned with health and safety requirements

  • Maintain labs to best-practice standards (clean, safe, operational)

  • Act as a key support partner across academic and professional teams

About You

To be successful in this position, you’ll have as a minimum:

Core capabilities:

  • Strong technical expertise in laboratory environments (chemistry, textiles, material testing or similar)

  • Proven experience managing lab equipment, maintenance, and troubleshooting

  • High-level understanding of health, safety and compliance frameworks

  • Ability to support both teaching and research outcomes simultaneously

  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills (academics, students, external partners)

  • Solid organisational skills and ability to operate in a fast-paced environment

  • Confident using digital systems for documentation and communication

Please Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children and National Police Check.

The College of Design and Social Context (DSC) brings together creative and practical disciplines across design, technology, and society. With over 21,000 students and a strong global presence, the College is recognised for delivering industry-connected, future-focused education and research.

Spanning areas such as art and design, media, education, and the built environment, DSC is known for tackling real-world challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Brunswick campus is a key hub, specialising in fashion, textiles, and material innovation, supported by advanced facilities including textile labs, design workshops, and specialised testing environments.
