The Asia General Account Investments serves as the in-house investment manager for all of Manulife’s Asia Segment’s ~USD 110 billion of life insurance company assets. The team directs investment of funds backing insurance reserves amongst different asset classes. It has direct responsibility managing over half of total Asia Segment’s assets and it oversees the investment management and performance of assets outsourced to affiliates - Manulife Investment Management - and other external managers as well. The team seeks to generate superior risk adjusted returns to support insurance product competitiveness and shareholder value.

Reporting to Co-Head of Fixed Income Portfolio Management Asia, General Account Investments (Singapore), this role is a member of the regional PM team with offices in Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo. This role is based in Tokyo, being legally part of Manulife Life Insurance Japan, and assumes shared portfolio management responsibilities for the entire Asia region. The incumbent works closely with other PMs in the region and have high level of interaction with Corporate Finance and Credit Analyst teams globally, Investment Operations, ALM, Compliance, Tax, Legal and other functional areas to meet our investment objectives.

The team is seeking an energetic team player to support the fast growing investment portfolio of Asia General Account Investments.  An inquisitive self-starter with a penchant for attention to details, the successful candidate leverages his/her logic and parallel thinking along with a strong quantitative background to quickly acquire knowledge and apply past experiences to address new challenges in investment management to advance his/her career in the asset management field. The incumbent must be able to analyze the trade-offs inherent in a volatile and complex market against the desired investment and risk objectives, and is encouraged to be creative and pragmatic to achieve best outcome for the firm and directly contribute to the company’s overall success.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and quantitative analysis for fixed income investments in global markets
  • Support the regional PM team in all aspects of fixed income investment process including performing relative value analysis, trade planning and execution, pre-trade compliance checking, exercising fair allocation, and instructing necessary cross-currency and rates hedging orders
  • Manage daily cash balances and arrange funding for FI investments and Non FI capital calls
  • Work with LifeCo teams on Tactical Asset Allocation, and understand BU's needs & constraints
  • Review periodic performance and attribution reports for senior management and liaise with BU to provide investment updates and fulfil ad-hoc requests
  • Work closely with Investment Operations, ALM, Compliance, Tax, Legal and other areas to ensure smooth portfolio management operations

What we are looking for

  • Prefer 3+ years practical and technical experience related to financial markets, e.g. fixed income investments, credit due diligence, credit underwriting, market research, and ALM. MBA, CFA designation preferred.
  • Possess a growth & innovative mindset and learn-it-all attitude. Passionate in investment management and financial markets.
  • Demonstrated self-starter and team player with positive attitude. Work independently with limited supervision.
  • Great attention to details. Strong analytical skills and numerical aptitude are required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are must.
  • Excellent PC skills; especially with Microsoft Excel (knowledge of advanced formulas, pivots, macro/ VBA knowledge is a plus), Power Point and Word; adaptive to proprietary PC tools
  • Japanese language skill a strong positive but not a requirement.
