Job Purpose

The Mgr, People Organization – Retail is a senior, handson HR Business Partner responsible for driving people strategy and execution for Assurant’s retailfacing businesses in Japan.

As a member of the Japan People Organization, this role partners closely with business leaders, managers, and employees to enable business growth, operational excellence, and a strong employee experience across retail and frontline populations. The role operates as a trusted advisor to leadership, balancing business needs, employee experience, and risk management, while ensuring alignment with Assurant’s global people strategy and governance.

Primary Job Accountabilities/ Responsibilities 

1. Strategic People Partnership (Retail Business)

  • Act as the primary People Partner for designated retail and frontline business segments in Japan.
  • Translate retail business strategy, growth plans, and operational priorities into effective people solutions, including workforce planning, organizational design, and talent strategy.
  • Provide data‑driven insights and recommendations to business leaders on people‑related risks, trends, and opportunities impacting business performance.

2. Employee Relations & Risk Management

  • Lead and manage complex employee relations matters, investigations, and urgent cases involving managers, employees, Legal, and Compliance.
  • Ensure fair, consistent, and compliant application of HR policies, procedures, and practices across retail operations.
  • Advise leaders on performance management, conduct issues, disciplinary actions, leave management, and working hour regulations, applying sound judgment and discretion.

3. Leadership Coaching & Capability Building

  • Serve as a trusted coach to retail leaders and people managers, reinforcing Assurant leadership principles and expectations.
  • Provide practical guidance and feedback to improve people management capability in a frontline and operational environment.
  • Design and deliver manager training sessions related to employee engagement, performance management, compliance, and people leadership.

4. Talent, Engagement & Culture

  • Support recruitment, retention, and succession planning efforts for retail and frontline roles.
  • Drive employee engagement initiatives, including action planning and follow‑through, to improve engagement and performance outcomes.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, growth, inclusion, and performance aligned with Assurant values.

5. Collaboration within People Organization

  • Partner closely with other Senior People Partners and People Partners in Japan to ensure consistency, knowledge sharing, and quality delivery.
  • Work with People Organization COEs (Compensation, Talent Acquisition, People Experience Center, Global Mobility, etc.) to deliver integrated HR solutions.
  • Leverage Workday, ERIN, and People analytics to identify trends, improve decision‑making, and enhance People Organization effectiveness.

6. Line Management

  • Act as direct manager to the People Organization Generalist (U‑Solutions), providing clear direction, coaching, feedback, and development support.
  • Ensure high quality, consistent delivery of BAU HR operations while enabling the People Partner to grow in capability and autonomy.
  • Allocate work appropriately between strategic initiatives and operational execution, maintaining sustainability of the team.

7. Support to VP, People Organization, Japan

  • Support the VP, People Organization, Japan on strategic initiatives, projects, and change programs related to retail businesses.
  • Act as a senior execution arm of Japan People strategy, ensuring that enterprise and country-level priorities are effectively embedded in retail operations.

​Required Experience, Skills, and knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Fluency in both Japanese and English
  • Min 7 years of experience as a HR Business Partner in a global company
  • Sound HRBP background with broad knowledge of employee relations, organizational development and planning, compensation, benefits, talent acquisition, training and development, talent management, and Japanese labor law
  • Prior retail experience
  • Proven experience supporting operational businesses with frontline or field populations (e.g., retail, service operations, franchise models)
  • Demonstrated people management experience, including coaching and developing HR team members.
  • Business acumen acquired through knowledge of sound business practices and project management
  • Strong growth mindset, grit and determination
  • Strong sense of ownership, responsibility, and urgency
  • Resourceful, agile, flexible, resilient, proactive, self-disciplined, matured
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills both in verbal and writing and influencing skills
  • Good at negotiation, conflict resolving and stakeholder management
  • Logical in thinking and expressing, always keeping comprehensive big picture yet detail oriented
  • Capable of managing through ambiguity and uncertainty
  • Good at Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel

Preferred Experience, Skills, and knowledge

  • Experience working in both large-scale established organization and small-sized organization at start-up or near start-up phase
  • Experience working in a US headquartered matrix organization
  • Experience in handling employe related investigations
  • Project management experience
