Job Description:

Job Summary:  Under the direct supervision of higher-level management, this position is primarily responsible for providing guidance, instruction and document completion for import/export transactions ensuring compliance to company policy and government requirements.  This position exercises independent judgment and operates within established corporate guidelines. 

  • Help to manage compliance for import/export, including evaluation of Customs Broker performance.
  • Self-motivated to see areas for improvement in the I/E group and assist in projects.
  • Excellent written/verbal communication skills to support day to day communication with Customers & Brokers.

Primary Responsibilities:

Import

  • Create/review and provide oversight for Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classification and Schedule B, requiring excellent problem-solving skills, methodical thinking, and teamwork with other company departments.
  • Assign HTS classifications for new components, finished goods, machines/equipment, vehicles, and other company imported goods.
  • Receive electronic import shipment notifications.
  • Prepare and provide instruction to brokers for import (BIL)
  • Assist broker with managing and executing company standard procedures.
  • Monitor and apply duty savings protocol.
  • Assist with other projects, as needed.

Export

  • Utilize the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) for export control and be able to assign appropriate ECCNs for export compliance.
  • Support and ensure company pre-export screening procedures are executed.
  • Provide instructions to shipping and freight forwarders for export transactions.
  • Generate export control documents.
  • Prohibited parties screening.

  • Oversee Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) company policies are maintained and executed.
  • Maintain, and update, the company C-TPAT profile with U.S. Customs for annual approval.
  • Lead periodic C-TPAT audits by U.S. Customs

FTA/COO/PGA/Etc.

  • Maintain internal local content database by acquiring country of origin information from suppliers.
  • Help maintain accurate country of origin information in the shipping database / ERP system.
  • Create and report local content reporting programs (USMCA, AALA, CAFE, Manufacturers Affidavit, etc.) including all reporting duties to customers and/or the government.
  • Complete other government agency Import/Export requirements, EPA, NHTSA, FCC, FDA, FAA, etc. as required.

Recordkeeping / Training / Etc.

  • Maintain daily import and export logs and liquidation dates.
  • Maintain master HTS classification / ECCN list.
  • Ensure import/export document retention per company policy.
  • Utilize Incoterms and provide guidance to employees for proper use.
  • Continuous education - Internal and external training seminars for position
  • Provide continuing education to employees.
  • Conduct Import/Export training to new-hire employees
  • Complete annual internal audits
  • Update Import and Export Manuals annually per new regulations and/or company procedures.
  • General staff support

Qualifications:

  • Excellent analytical and communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project
  • High level of customer interface experience
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Well organized, detail oriented

Education: Possess 4-year college degree, Customs Broker License preferred

Experience: 5 years of industry experience

Physical Demands: Required to sit or stand for long periods of time. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Travel: Domestic and international travel may be required as needed.
