Data Team Lead – Markets Data Office

About the role

We are creating a new, cross functional Market Data Office and are hiring a Data Team Lead to build and lead a team of 12 data specialists. You will own the operating model, set direction for data quality and controls, and ensure data is trusted, controlled and audit ready across three core data teams.

The team is dedicated to implementing, executing, and continuously improving data quality processes and controls across multiple core data portfolio teams.

  • Scope: Lead a horizontal team supporting three existing data teams and partner closely with product, architecture, business and Risk/Compliance.

  • Objective: Define standards, implement controls and deliver measurable improvements in data trust and compliance.

  • Team size & setup: ~10 specialists; hybrid working model.

  • Balance: Combine people leadership with delivery ownership and governance accountability.

  • Impact: Shape how the organisation manages data quality, lineage, access and audit evidence.

Responsibilities and key deliverables

You will translate business and regulatory needs into repeatable data quality practices, run control execution, and make quality visible through governance and reporting. The role requires both strategic design of frameworks and hands-on delivery to ensure controls work in production.

  • Build and lead the team: Recruit, onboard and develop specialists; refine/define roles, expectations and career paths.

  • Design and operate DQ frameworks: Create rules, thresholds, monitoring logic and actionable metrics for critical data domains.

  • Implement controls and evidence: Establish controls for completeness, accuracy, reconciliation, lineage, access and privacy; ensure documentation is audit ready.

  • Governance & reporting: Deliver dashboards, KPIs and a governance cadence that surfaces risks and progress to stakeholders.

  • Issue management & automation: Put in place clear processes for issue identification, escalation and closure; prioritise automation and self-service to reduce manual effort.

Qualifications, behaviours and success criteria

We are seeking a leader with deep, hands‑on expertise in data governance and data quality, capable of driving complex, cross‑functional delivery. You don’t need to be an engineer, but you must understand how data flows, how controls are applied, and how quality is measured and improved across modern data platforms.

  • Experience: 10+ years in data, analytics, data management or engineering, plus 4–6+ years leading data teams

  • Data expertise: Deep experience with data quality frameworks, controls, metadata, lineage, reconciliation and evidence standards, with a proven ability to embed and mature these across domains

  • Technical fluency: Strong understanding of data pipelines, transformation logic and cloud platforms (Azure/AWS), including how DQ tooling, automation and monitoring fit into the ecosystem

  • Governance & compliance: Skilled in regulated environments (financial services, AML/KYC, privacy, audit) and in building “audit‑ready” processes

  • Leadership & delivery: Demonstrated success leading teams of 8–15, running multi‑team programmes and aligning stakeholders across business, tech and control functions

  • Empathetic communication: Builds trust, creates psychological safety and translates complex data concepts into clear, actionable messages

  • Collaborative mindset: Builds strong relationships, promotes shared ownership and ensures diverse perspectives are included

  • Proactive problem‑solving: Anticipates risks, takes early ownership and drives continuous improvement to remove friction and accelerate delivery

Success in 6–12 months: Team hired and onboarded; baseline quality metrics and governance dashboard in place; core controls implemented in at least one critical domain; automation roadmap defined with initial quick wins underway.
