Over the years, The Lancet has evolved as a family of medical journals. We seek to address urgent topics in our society, initiate debate, put medical science into context and influence decision makers around the world. This is an entry level graduate position based in Central London that would suit someone who is keen to establish a career within medical publishing. The role will consolidate basic publishing skills, offer close liaison with the Editorial department, and provide opportunities for personal development such as occasionally writing for Lancet journals. The successful applicant for this full-time post will report to the Editorial Assistant Team Leader and will be responsible for supporting the administrative processes of the Lancet family of journals and provide customer service to readers, authors, and reviewers. Special responsibilities can include picture research, managing author’s proposals and commissioning for review content, and the creation and production of tracking reports which are essential for an efficient flow of manuscripts and content planning. There will also be opportunities to assist with Editorial projects that will support The Lancet’s strategy.
Main Activities and Responsibilities:
· To assist the Editors in tracking manuscripts from submission to publication.
· To assist with the maintenance of our databases and web-submission system.
· Be a primary contact for members of the editorial team and be willing to help editors to work as efficiently as possible.
· Answer enquiries from authors, editors, reviewers, and the public. This will require awareness of the confidential nature of the peer review process.
· Oversee efficient and accurate digital filing and file retrieval.
· Co-ordinate and maintain Lancet business continuity processes.
· Assist with running and navigating meetings and occasionally taking notes.
· Seek to improve processes both within our team and The Lancet as a whole. This is a busy role and small improvements can have a very noticeable positive effect.
· To create and produce Lancet metrics reports, and to refine and present results efficiently in Excel.
· Administering stakeholders’ payments for the Lancet journals. Troubleshooting with payees and Elsevier payment departments to ensure timely payment.
· Provide support with holiday and absence cover for colleagues and train new starters.
Skills and Qualifications:
· Undergraduate degree level is required.
· Strong English language skills, with sound communication and interpersonal skills.
· Must be able to work independently, but also be an excellent team player willing to adapt to the needs and requirements of a busy department.
· Strong organisational skills. A can-do approach to work and an interest in medical publishing. Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
· A customer and people focused approach is essential.
· Must be able to demonstrate a proactive and flexible attitude, with a keen willingness to show initiative.
· Proficient in using Microsoft Office packages.
