Tool and Die Grinder – Grade 18

Responsibilities:

  • Grinding Operations: Perform precision grinding on die components using surface grinders.
  • Die Service Support: Assist senior makers with cleaning, sharpening, and timing progressive carbide dies.
  • Blueprint Reading: Interpret technical drawings and manufacturing data sheets for exact dimension specifications.
  • Quality Inspection: Measure ground components using micrometers, calipers, gauge blocks, and dial indicators.
  • Routine Maintenance: Complete basic preventive maintenance on grinding machines and fluid filtration systems.
  • Equipment Rotation: Train gradually on manual mills, lathes, and CNC equipment.
  • Workplace Safety: Adhere to safety procedures and wear appropriate personal protective equipment, maintain a clean, organized workstation complying with all manufacturing safety protocols.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and other team members.

Requirements:

  • Education: Minimum completion of a basic machining certificate program or equivalent technical coursework.
  • Detail Orientation: High comprehension skills with a strong aptitude for tight-tolerance, detailed work.
  • Mathematical Skills: Basic understanding of shop math, geometry, and mechanical blueprint interpretation.
  • Ability to work daily and weekend overtime, including overtime on short notice.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods (8-12 hours per shift)
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for precision work
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and work in various positions
  • Visual acuity to read blueprints, measuring instruments, and inspect fine details
  • Ability to work in manufacturing environment with noise, dust, and temperature variations
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Operator will be trained in all steps of the job.
  • Operator will be trained in operating electric pallet trucks.
  • Must know where Emergency Stops are located for the press you are running.
  • Must check Emergency Stops and light curtains to be working properly.
  • Frequently grip with hands, turn, push, and bend, along with occasionally reaching above shoulder level, and pulling.
  • Ability to walk and/or stand for long periods of time and to keep up with the demanding pace of production.
  • Possess the dexterity and hand-eye coordination to utilize various hand tools, power tools, and other equipment to complete a variety of complex task. Equipment includes but is not limited to: electric chain hoists, pneumatic shears, pneumatic wire twisters, electric pallet jacks, manual pallet jacks, and controls with knobs and buttons. The employee must also possess the ability to assist in performing press-line equipment set-up and clearing of die jams.

Required Education to progress into a full Tool and Die Maker Status:

  • Foundational Machining & G-Code Basics.
  • Blueprint Reading & GD&T: Advanced interpretation of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Basic G-Code Programming: M-codes (machine functions) and G-codes (motion functions).
  • Shop Math & Trigonometry: Calculating sine, cosine, tangent, and right triangles to find missing coordinates and angles on a die blueprint.
  • CNC Mill Operation & Programming
  • Machine Setup: Learning to tram a vise, set workpiece coordinates and edge-find raw stock.
  • Tooling & Speeds/Feeds: Selecting correct endmills, drills, and carbide inserts, and calculating correct RPM and feed rates for tool steel.
  • CAD/CAM Integration: Utilizing software like Mastercam to import 3D models, select toolpaths, and post-process G-code.
  • Wire EDM Operation & Programming
  • EDM Technology Fundamentals: Understanding dielectric fluid filtration, wire tension, deionization, and spark erosion principles.
  • Carbide Handling: Learning the specific flush settings and power settings required to cut carbide without causing micro-cracking.
  • Workpiece Wire Setup: Aligning the wire vertically (sub-die alignment), threading, and utilizing automatic wire threading (AWT) systems.
  • Multi-Axis Programming: Programming independent upper and lower guide movements (4-axis cutting) for die draft angles and reliefs.

Operators will be trained in all steps of the job.

Stretching exercises will be done at the beginning of every shift.

Supervisor will go over Job Safety Analysis sheets, safety checklist, personal protective equipment (PPE) and instructions on performing daily clean up.

Always follow the Work Instructions:

Ability to understand and follow all ABB safety policies, safety training and hazard communication information. This includes but is not limited to wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, hearing protection, safety shoes, cut resistant gloves, and safety sleeves when required.

Ability to maintain regular work attendance, including arriving at work on time and remaining at work until the end of the workday schedule.

Progressive Goals:

  • Years 1–2: Master high-precision grinding and basic manual machining.

  • Years 3–4: Crosstrain on CNC, Wire EDM, and full progressive die troubleshooting and feed rates for tool steel.

The work model for the role is: Onsite

Hourly pay range: $25.00-$31.28

(Shift premium for 2nd & 3rd shift)
