About the role

Group Benefits (GB) Finance is seeking a Director, Disability Pricing & Profitability Management that will report to the AVP, Pricing and Profitability Management, Group Benefits. Leading a team of four associates, the Director is responsible for the financial management of the GB Disability business, which is a key contributor to GB’s total income. This role works in close partnership with a variety of stakeholders across the GB business, including other Finance teams, Underwriting, Business Development, Disability Operations, Product Development, Government Relations and ALM to drive profitable growth and manage emerging risks on the disability portfolio. This position is an excellent opportunity to learn about the disability business and gain pricing and people management experience. 

What you’ll be doing

Pricing

  • Determine appropriate pricing levels based on financial objectives, market insights and competitive dynamics.

  • Complete experience studies and enhance pricing models.

  • Own the generalized pricing framework that Underwriting uses to price Short-Term Disability and Long-Term Disability business.

  • Support Underwriting and Business Development on bespoke and large transactions.

Monitor Disability Performance to Drive Business Action

  • Monitor and explain monthly and quarterly results.

  • Provide regular forecasts and continue to enhance our forecasting capabilities.

  • Work with our reinsurance partners and share market insights.

  • Support GB’s planning process.

Support Business Decisions that Impact Disability Profitability

  • Support and identify opportunities that enhance business practices that could improve financial results.

  • Assess financial implications and risk of proposed government legislation.

  • Support various product initiatives.

Leadership

  • Lead a team of four associates and one coop.

  • Attract, develop and retain a high performing team.

  • Member of the GB Pricing Leadership Team.

What you’ll need to succeed

  • Qualified FSA and/or FCIA

  • 7 years of relevant experience in the Insurance or Group Benefits industry.

  • Strong technical, analytical & problem-solving skills that drive actionable insights.

  • Strong communication skills (written, verbal, and presentation), with the ability to adapt messaging in accordance with the audience.

  • Driven to understand the business and the underlying factors impacting results.

  • Collaborates effectively across teams.

  • Ability to lead projects and manage multiple priorities.

  • Takes initiative and drives for results.

  • Keen interest in improvement of analyses, processes and reporting.

  • As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only as the position includes managing both French and English-speaking staff (Quebec and outside Quebec) and providing daily support to the team.

Location: Toronto, Waterloo, Montreal are preferred locations

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
