Job Description

The Head of Research is a senior management position that leads multiple sector teams who provide in-depth financial analysis, closely monitor latest trends in assigned sectors and deliver actionable insights used by portfolio managers in their investment decision making process. Accepted internally and externally as a subject matter expert in their own regard, providing guidance to fellow analysts in their pursuit to excel in their respective sectors. Proactive in setting research priorities in conjunction with regional and local stakeholders, including but not limited to the Regional Head of Research and the Local Head of Global Markets. The role requires a broad and comprehensive understanding of capital markets both locally and globally. Is a true thought leader, who as a player coach similarly emphasizes the importance of gaining meaningful mindshare with Citibank’s set of valued clients via innovative research ideas and timely recommendations. Recognized as having a solid understanding of Compliance and financial regulations overall; providing supervisory oversight to the team and a champion in de-escalating potential issues before they manifest. Must possess excellent communication skills, a key requirement to be able to mentor effectively and negotiate (internally/externally) at any level.

Full management responsibility for multiple teams, including resource allocation, people management, budget and planning, performance evaluation and compensation.
 


Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrated leadership of a multi-disciplinary team, track record of successful internal and external stakeholder engagement and clarity of judgement will be a precursor to success
  • Responsible for creating and delivering strategy, managing the research team, building a strong governance and controls, and leading the delivery of insightful, original and high quality analysis
  • Manage performance through formal and informal goal-setting, ongoing feedback, coaching and delivery of mid-year and year-end performance reviews
  • Recruit and develop Analysts and Associates
  • Internal development and planning, career mapping and mentorship
  • Identify and mentor high-functioning individuals
  • Develop robust characteristics grid for future hiring and development
  • Communicate firm, divisional and departmental strategy across the junior population
  • Develop internal talent rotational programs and internships
  • Enhance collaboration across divisions and regions
  • Recognize / reward achievements and contributions
  • Work with senior Analysts to ensure coverage efficiency and collaboration.
  • Evolve and monitor Associate and Analyst performance metrics
  • Establish an atmosphere of inclusiveness, contribution, accountability and teamwork
  • Work with the DoR and Corporate Access, Sales and Trading to offer best service to internal clients
  • Focus on the development and engagement of a diverse workforce where diversity is accepted, welcomed, and cultivated
  • Protect firm with knowledge around compliance and legal processes and procedures
  • Work in close partnership with control functions such as Legal, Compliance, Market and Credit Risk, Audit, Finance in order to ensure appropriate governance and control infrastructure
  • Build a culture of responsible finance, good governance and supervision, expense discipline and ethics
  • Appropriately assess risk/reward of transactions when making business decisions; and ensure that all team members understand the need to do the same, demonstrating proper consideration for the firm’s reputation
  • Be familiar with and adhere to Citi’s Code of Conduct and the Plan of Supervision for Global Markets and Securities Services; and ensure that all team members understand the need to do the same
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures as defined by your role which will be communicated to you
  • Obtain and maintain all registrations/licenses which are required for your role, within the appropriate timeframe
  • Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervise the activity of others and create accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards.

Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of relevant experience
  • MBA or graduate degree and/or CFA preferred
  • Experience as a Research Analyst
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to empathize, communicate clearly, set the tone of the department and build trust
  • Strategic innovation – help to design / implement a strategic plan in a dynamic business environment
  • Attention to detail
  • Secure and maintain applicable licenses

Education:

  • Bachelor’s/University degree, Master’s degree preferred and managerial experience

Australian Prudential Responsibilities. This role is a Responsible Person role, and as a result, the Head of Research will have prudential responsibilities as a Senior Manager of Citigroup Global Markets Australia Pty Limited. The incumbent will be required to be assessed as fit and proper to hold the role prior to appointment and reassessed annually.
