Job Description

Join our Global Technology Services Management and Support Team!

Reporting to the Director of Platform Engineering. You will provide technical resource management and provide guidance to existing platform engineering teams.

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager who is passionate about leading a team with the purpose of enabling visibility of application health and performance data. Contributing to the our AI Operations Team in delivering value and driving successful implementation of the solutions.

Our team provides consulting and application monitoring services to other teams, creates application dashboards and finds innovative ways to surface operational data using an observability tool stack. We are an integral part of a transformation to be a data-driven organization. Our goal is to facilitate quick and easy understanding of the customer and business partner experience for applications in all segments of our global organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of technology engineers and professionals dedicated to the success of our Observability Framework.
  • Collaborate with technical partners to understand implications on Manulife’s technology strategy.
  • Develop and maintain a strategic roadmap for AI Operations and Tools, for monitoring and alerts.
  • Manage new requests for work from our partner teams across all segments.
  • Create visibility of our myriad of data and help our partners understand this data.
  • Supporting the team to enhance and develop our tooling.
  • Managing communications with our allies in the business using terms and language that they understand (translating Tech-speak to business language)
  • Maintaining positive relationships with many internal teams and our vendor partner.
  • Track emerging technology and policy trends that might affect day-to-day operations.
  • Adapting to quickly changing priorities.


You will bring and continuously build upon the following skills:

  • 5+ years’ experience within people and technical leadership roles.
  • Excellent ability to provide mentoring, coaching and career development to team members.
  • Experience with jira and running agile ceremonies.
  • Experience with monitoring tools: New Relic, Moogsoft, CA APM, PRTG.
  • Understanding of Reliability Engineering and the benefits of it.
  • Respond well to ambiguity and work efficiently to clarify situations and outcomes.
  • Collaborative attitude, willingness to work with team members; able to coach, participate in design reviews, support or drive design sessions.
  • Good organization and problem-solving skills that enable you to manage through creative abrasion.
  • Good verbal and written communication; able to effectively articulate technical vision, possibilities and outcomes.
  • You must be passionate about using data to advance our effectiveness and enable superb customer experiences.
  • A focus and passion for Innovation, creativity and curiosity; creating excellent customer experiences.
  • Confidence to challenge and ask hard questions with different work partners such as colleagues, technical teams and vendors.
  • A sense of humor because we want to enjoy doing our work!

Salary & Benefits

The annual base salary for this role is listed below.

Primary Location

Waterloo, Ontario

Salary range is expected to be between

$92,190.00 CAD - $171,210.00 CAD

The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training.
