THE ROLE – Server

Under the direction of the Food and Beverage Manager, the Server is responsible for providing the highest degree of professional catering service to guests of the Wilmington Convention Center with the goal of achieving customer satisfaction and retention.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Pre-Event Duties

  • Attend pre-function meetings for briefing of event details.
  • Assist with the preparation and set-up of event rooms as needed.
  • Prepare tables with place settings as instructed.
  • Assist in any and all side work including but not limited to cleaning and filling salt and pepper containers, sugar dishes, and creamers; collecting banquet equipment such as flatware, china, glassware, and serving pieces; and preparing garnishes, beverages, condiments, and breads.

Event Service Duties

  • Always provide friendly and courteous guest services.
  • Remain at assigned station(s) and perform duties according to each event.
  • Report any guest concerns and/or complaints to the Banquet Captain or the Food and Beverage Manager.

Post-Event Duties

  • Breakdown tables and banquet equipment.
  • Clean and return serving pieces to proper storage area.

Other Duties

  • Report to work in proper uniform according to scheduled time.
  • Adhere to strict grooming standards and policies as defined by WCC.
  • Maintain the front and back of the house in a clean and orderly fashion.
  • Provide guidance and support to the temporary staff assigned to an event.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

THE ROLE – Bar Lead

Under the direction of the Food and Beverage Manager, the Bar Captain is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of alcoholic beverage service for scheduled events during assigned shifts. Leads and directs Bartenders and Barbacks (both part-time regular and temporary staff), complies with standard procedures in securing and accessing the inventory of alcoholic beverages, and follows established guest relations policies. Provides the highest degree of professional service to guests and clients of the Wilmington Convention Center with the goal of achieving customer satisfaction and retention.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Pre-Event Duties

  • Consult with the Food and Beverage Captain and Food and Beverage Manager regarding service arrangements, equipment requirements, and required staffing levels and assignments.
  • Assist in the delivery of pre-function meetings for the briefing of event details with staff. Inspects uniforms, reviews menus and event itineraries.
  • Open bars, ensuring each bar is properly stocked according to client specifications. Provide each bar with fully operational equipment and the appropriate amount of cash.
  • Oversee bar set-ups, assisting Food and Beverage Captain and Beverage Bartenders and Barbacks as needed.
  • Inspect bar space(s) to ensure cleanliness, sanitation, organization and ambiance.

Event Service Duties

  • Manage guest and staff concerns and complaints and resolve problems within the scope of authority.
  • Observe beverages served to ensure they are correctly poured, garnished and arranged.
  • Take orders and serve guests as needed to ensure that quality service is maintained at all times.
  • Determine whether a guest should or should not be served alcoholic beverages in accordance with SAVOR policies.

Post-Event Duties

  • Close bars in a staggered fashion, collecting cash, receipts and equipment in a secure and safe manner.
  • Reconcile each Bartender’s drawer, calculating cash on hand and receipt totals against equipment sales reports.
  • Complete bar inventory by working directly with each Bartender/Barback.
  • Maintain Consumption Sheets in support of the Food and Beverage Manager.
  • Ensure that all closing duties are completed prior to shift sign out. Complete all paperwork in accordance with departmental standards.
  • Provide feedback on staff performance to Food and Beverage Manager. Report disciplinary issues and participate in the counseling of employees.

Other Duties

  • Notify Food and Beverage Captain and Manager of all pertinent information and irregularities occurring during assigned shifts.
  • Ensure that the Alcoholic Beverage Storeroom is secured and accessed per SAVOR procedural guidelines.
  • Maintain excellent working relationships with other food service staff, such as Servers, Executive Chef, kitchen staff and operations crews.
  • Assist in the orientation and training of new alcoholic beverage service staff.
  • Perform the responsibilities of a Bartender or Barback, as needed.
  • Act as a Banquet Captain during scheduled shifts when alcoholic beverage service is not provided.
  • Ensure that the front and back of the house are maintained in a clean and orderly fashion.
  • Foster and promote a cooperative working climate, maximizing productivity and employee morale.
  • Conduct inventory of all bar beverages. Notify the Food and Beverage Manager and Executive Chef when product supplies are low, such as beverages, garnishments, coffee, creamers, lemons, etc. May order supplies as necessary.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES    

This position leads and directs Servers (both regular part-time and temporary staff) on assigned shifts. Assists the Food and Beverage Manager in interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning and assigning work; appraising performance; disciplining employees in conjunction with Human Resources; addressing issues and resolving problems.

In the absence of the Food and Beverage Manager, this position may assume the responsibilities of this role.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE  

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 1-year work experience as a Bartender in a catering environment similar to the Wilmington Convention Center.
  • Thorough knowledge of bar service operations and terminology.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet strict deadlines.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Excellent guest service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, maintaining physical and mental stamina.
  • Ability to deal effectively with guests, management, employees and outside vendors while working under pressure.

COMPUTER SKILLS  

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products preferred.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Available to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holiday, in addition to normal business hours as needed.
  • Ability to acquire Serv Safe Alcohol Certification and RASP Certification within 6 months of employment.
