The Comparative Medicine Operations Specialist is primarily responsible for providing basic husbandry, handling, restraint, and health surveillance of laboratory animals in accordance with local regulatory requirements. This role also includes maintaining inventory of animal supplies and delivering basic technical support for research studies, such as restraint, injections, and blood collections.
All responsibilities must be performed in compliance with applicable regulatory standards.
What You Will Achieve
Perform routine animal husbandry duties as directed
Observe and report status of animal health, food and water consumption, appearance, behavior
Provide support in basic veterinary medical treatment as prescribed by the veterinary staff
Support cage wash equipment operations and maintenance
Support research by providing basic technical services (restraint, dose administration,) to research investigators
Required to work with all species housed at the site
Train and mentor new hires in animal husbandry and facility support duties fulfilling department training requirements
May be required to work under one of the following: The United States Department of Agriculture Animal
Welfare Act and associated Regulations and Standards, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory
Animals, Good Laboratory Practices, Public Health Service Policy and/or AAALAC accreditation standards
Here Is What You Need (Minimum Requirements)
Education: High school diploma, or GED
Work Experience: Minimum 4 years
Basic animal husbandry and handling
Experience working with animals
Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and work while standing for extended periods, including lifting items above shoulder level.
Ability to perform repetitive physical activities, such as:
Pushing and pulling racks of caging
Lifting bags of feed and bedding
Reaching, stooping, and bending
Health Requirement:
For positions located at sites with nonhuman primates, employees are expected to enter nonhuman primate areas as part of their job responsibilities.
Pre-hire requirement includes either:
Providing proof of measles immunity, or
Receiving the measles vaccination prior to hire
NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS
Work Schedule & Essential Role Requirements
Overtime: Required one day every other week
Weekend & Holiday Work: Mandatory as part of the role
Start Time: Workday begins at 6:00 a.m.
Essential Personnel:
This position is classified as Essential Personnel, meaning the individual is expected to report to their designated work location during emergencies or when business operations are suspended. Essential Personnel are critical to maintaining essential functions or departments, as determined by Pfizer.
In some cases, individuals may be identified in advance by their supervisors to perform essential services remotely. However, most Essential Personnel are required to be onsite during such events.
