Quality Supervisor

The Quality Supervisor leads as the quality champion for the plant. Responsible for leading and implementing quality programs to ensure safe and quality production of animal milk replacer. The Quality Supervisor will ensure that quality standards are maintained as required by company standards and external regulations. Supervise and coordinate lab staff/activities, manufacturing quality processes/checks, and testing required for quality assurance. This position will be accountable for focusing on the reduction of non-conformances, consumer complaints and driving process improvements for all Calva sites. Support quality statements, policies and implement continuous improvement under the guidance and direction of the Plant Manager (PM). Facilitate communication between production, shipping, and quality departments to drive continuous improvement. Execute objectives under minimal direction with the ability to affect business goals and partner/participate in company-wide initiatives. Gain support and commitment from other plant departments, as well as with other divisions within the organization. Support Land O'Lakes values and integrity in all plant activities. Promote an environment for open and timely teamwork/communication and actively enlist input from others and respond to others.

Duty or Area of Responsibility

  • Supervise/schedule lab employees, establish priorities and oversee lab activities to ensure quality requirements are met with maximum labor productivity.

  • Enterprise Quality Management System (EQMS) – Develop, implement, update, monitor, and ensure EQMS programs/SOPs/standards are followed.

  • Complete required EQMS self-assessments, plant inspections, and process validations.

  • Manage Animal Food Safety Plan and obtain PCQI certification to ensure regulatory compliance.

  • Oversee all quality testing (CV, Assay, Carryover, etc.). Ensure timely and accurate results.

  • Ensure quality regulatory compliance for all Calva sites.

  • Lead quality audits/inspections (EQMS, lab, regulatory, etc.). Maintain good working relationship with CDFA.

  • Manage and Execute quality training for all facility employees.

  • Manage quality permits/licenses, regulatory compliance, and required quality records.

  • Contain and manage all non-conforming product. Work with quality partners and PM to assign dispositions timely and reduce hold inventory.

  • Oversee daily positive release process.

  • Take charge of quality investigations and leverage Enablon/Product Safety Quality Event (PSQEs) to implement preventive actions.

  • Work with customer service and sales to follow up on customer concerns/complaints. Drive internal investigations, develop corrective/preventive actions and report results.

  • Manage lab equipment through proper preventative maintenance and calibrations. Maintain inventory of testing materials and spare parts to reduce equipment downtime and minimize cost.

  • Procure quotes, parts, supplies, services, and equipment required for quality activities.

  • Update and analyze monthly quality metrics to improve site results.

  • Assist formulations by analyzing test results, identifying trends, and recommending formula adjustments.

  • Lead projects and offer alternate options to enable creative/cost effective solutions to complex problems.

  • Ensure good manufacturing/housekeeping practices are in place and proper documentation is completed.

  • Oversee quality activities and pest control for all Calva sites. Manage Ecolab vendor.

  • Oversee the hiring, orienting, promoting and compensation process of lab employees to ensure a competent workforce.

  • Provide training, coaching, counseling, and discipline to quality employees. Set expectations and hold team members accountable.

  • Communicate job expectations; planning, monitoring, appraising, and reviewing job contributions.

  • Identify and drive cost savings initiatives.

  • Analyze process workflow, employee and space requirements and equipment layout; implement changes.

  • Review personnel performance to determine individuals most suited for promotion.

  • Any other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Traits:

  • Strong Microsoft Office suite and written communication skills

  • Conveys information clearly and effectively in both written and verbal format.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to motivate and direct others.

Experience-Education Required:

  • Associate degree or comparable professional qualifications and 3-5 years experience in quality in feed, food or related fields of operation OR High school diploma and 5+ years experience in quality in feed, food or related fields of operation

Experience-Education (Preferred):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Animal/Food Science or related field is preferred.

  • Previous supervisory / regulatory experience.

Time Demands:

  • On occasion, business demands may require some employees to work overtime and weekends.

  • When overtime is required, employees are expected to work extra hours as required to meet business needs – this is a requirement of this position
