About this Opportunity
As a Compliance Investigator II - Crypto, you will be a part of PayPal’s Global Financial Crimes and Consumer Protection organization tasked with ensuring that activity within the PayPal system is compliant with Anti-Money Laundering regulations and guidelines. You will be expected to be an AML Subject Matter Expert, with specific emphasis on Cryptocurrency, High-Risk, and Complex Investigations. You will be responsible for the creation and timely delivery of SARs to local regulators. In the preparation of SARs, you will exercise independent judgment and discretion handling highly sensitive casework. In this role, you will investigate customer activity across multiple platforms to ensure that it falls within acceptable parameters established by governing bodies including, but not limited to all relevant FIUs (Financial Intelligence Units).
You will need to demonstrate the ability to understand opposing points of view on highly complex issues and to navigate and integrate differing viewpoints stemming from all levels of Global Compliance & Ethics leadership. You may be expected to interact with peers and financial crimes risk professionals, all levels of management, and other internal or external constituents to represent reasoning of case disposition. It will be critical for you to stay current with policy changes, latest financial crime trends, and seek ways to enhance the current investigative processes.
About the Role
Apply analytic techniques to complex information sets to make logical and effectively supported recommendations on cases for reporting. Such investigation decisions are critical to PayPal’s fiduciary responsibility under the Bank Secrecy Act (Anti-Money Laundering rules) to effectively monitor customers’ activities regarding detecting and reporting suspicious activity
Assess customer profiles and large amounts of data to ensure normal and expected activity, including Acceptable Use Policy adherence and Know Your Customer efforts
Document complex findings in a clear narrative style format, in the simplified case management (SCM) system and prepare reports to management as required
Regularly exercise good judgment in making decisions or recommendations in relation to multiple complex case investigations
While other members of the team have a broad mandate when it comes to investigations, this role is specifically focused on High Risk, Complex, and Cryptocurrency (or “Crypto”) investigations
Analysis of trends within the use of Crypto on the PayPal platform to find potential methods of abuse and ensure our detections are working properly.
Size and Scope: Performs portions of work assignments requiring general domain knowledge and developing business expertise
Supports and may lead projects of limited scope impacting function or sub-function
Analyzes and makes decisions within limited parameters under regular supervision
Receives regular and general instruction and guidance from more experienced colleagues on work in the form of specific objectives
Level of Expertise: Applies intermediate level of subject matter knowledge and understanding of own function while gaining additional function specific experience, basic understanding of how own function interacts with related functions
Complexity: Exercised judgment within defined processes and procedures to determine appropriate actions or to recommend resolutions
Works on problems of moderate scope that may require analysis of situations, data or problems
About you
A Bachelor’s degree is preferred in Finance, Legal, Criminal Justice or a comparable field.
Minimum of 2+ years’ experience conducting research and investigations related to Anti-Money Laundering, Suspicious Activity Reporting (SAR), Brand Risk Management (BRM) or Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) investigations required
Proven ability to analyze large amounts of data to report critical information
Exceptional oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex information accurately, clearly, and quickly to all levels
Ability to understand opposing points of view on highly complex issues
Proven knowledge of international and regional Anti-Money Laundering and Sanctions regulations and guidance such as Bank Secrecy Act (US) and US Patriot Act.
Interact with peers and financial crimes risk professionals, all levels of management, and other internal or external constituents to deliver comprehensive views on investigative and intelligence matters and represent reasoning of case disposition
Crypto-specific investigative work experience (in a compliance role at a Crypto firm, or at a regulatory or law-enforcement agency) or strong foundational cryptocurrency ecosystem knowledge is preferred
Experience in use of cryptocurrency specific forensics tools is preferred
ACAMS certification is preferred
Advanced data query and analysis skills (SQL, SAS, Teradata, Hadoop, etc.)
