Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over one million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states.

Waymo's Systems Engineering team works together to blend software and hardware systems in groundbreaking new ways. We set the high performance standards that ensure our vehicles run smoothly and keep passengers safe, then design and perform the tests that validate that performance. We're looking for talented teammates who’ll help us maintain strong teamwork and are passionate about driving results.

You will:

  • Be responsible for Vehicle platform Infotainment systems,  Body controls (working internally with Waymo Product team and externally with OEM base vehicle partner) and communication networks - writing requirements for our OEM partners to set up Infotainment systems,  body control and network communication interfaces for SDS. They will be working with the OEMs and Functional Systems Engineers (e.g. Power, Infotainment systems, Thermal, Motion Controls) to define the Infotainment systems,  body control and communications network architecture together with functional safety requirements
  • Write detailed requirements for Waymo embedded software adjacencies to implement Infotainment systems,  body control and communication interfaces to the vehicle platform
  • Conduct redundancy analysis of communications networks, which signals need to be redundant and why, parameter definition to satisfy performance and functional safety requirements. Ensure the safety critical Infotainment systems,  body control functions such as redundant exterior lighting is designed and implemented in collaboration with all key stakeholders
  • Help create Verification and Validation (V&V) plans, analyze test results  for Infotainment systems,  body controls and platform communications across various platforms and prototype phases. You will plan and execute tests, analyze test data, analyze field issues, and understand and resolve defects leveraging the operations team where possible
  • Work with embedded software teams during implementation to ensure requirements will be met. Write design documents for new architecture / implementation, review with software teams and incorporate updates as needed.
  • Manage delivery timing  of feature sets and updates to vehicle prototype fleet software and troubleshooting issues to achieve the required capability set for each vehicle

You have:

  • A deep knowledge of vehicle communication networks and protocols (Physical and Application layer, e.g. CAN, FlexRay, LIN, Ethernet, DBCs, etc) and an understanding of the embedded systems that control via these networks. Also, a solid understanding of how to interface to Infotainment systems and  body control functions
  • Appreciation of Infotainment systems,  body controls and communication networks in safety critical systems and the importance of fail-safe vs. fail tolerant, required timing etc.
  • The ability to create & negotiate targets and requirements with OEMs and Waymo adjacencies and create and execute effective DVPs as part of the role. A bonus will be somebody who understands the automotive development process and phases (e.g. M1, VB, TT etc.)

We prefer:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Physics or similar
  • At least 3 years experience in an automotive (or similar industry) electrical communication networks, Infotainment systems,  body controls  and software role delivering hardware and/or software
  • Working knowledge of vehicle communication network systems (CAN, FlexRay, LIN, Ethernet, etc.), Infotainment systems,  and body control systems such as doors, interior/exterior lighting, windows, seats, switchgear, etc
  • Experience in fail-safe and fail-tolerant system design
  • Experience mapping out design and requirements for complex vehicles with attention to detail, to ensure gaps and flow-downs are fully covered
