General Superintendent

Position Summary

The General Superintendent provides overall field leadership and operational oversight for mechanical construction projects, including HVAC, plumbing, piping, and industrial systems installations. This role is responsible for managing field operations, labor productivity, workforce planning, safety performance, project execution, and coordination between field teams and office leadership.

The General Superintendent works closely with Project Managers, Operations Leadership, Fabrication, and field supervision to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within budget while maintaining high standards of quality and client satisfaction.

The ideal candidate is a highly experienced field leader with strong mechanical construction expertise, leadership capability, and the ability to manage multiple projects and field teams simultaneously.

Key Responsibilities

Field Operations Leadership

  • Oversee daily field operations across multiple mechanical construction projects.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and support to Superintendents, Foremen, and field personnel.
  • Ensure projects are staffed appropriately to meet schedules, productivity goals, and operational demands.
  • Coordinate manpower planning and labor allocation across projects and regions.
  • Monitor project execution to ensure alignment with company standards, schedules, budgets, and quality expectations.
  • Support field teams in resolving operational challenges, installation conflicts, and resource constraints.

Project Execution & Coordination

  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Estimating, Fabrication, BIM/VDC, and Operations teams to support project success.
  • Participate in project planning, turnover meetings, scheduling discussions, and coordination efforts.
  • Review project schedules, manpower projections, and installation strategies.
  • Ensure field teams have the materials, equipment, drawings, and support necessary for successful execution.
  • Monitor labor productivity and provide recommendations to improve operational performance.

Safety Leadership

  • Promote and enforce a strong safety culture across all projects and field operations.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company policies, and client safety requirements.
  • Conduct site visits, safety audits, toolbox talks, and field observations.
  • Support incident investigations, corrective actions, and continuous safety improvement initiatives.
  • Hold field leadership accountable for maintaining safe and compliant jobsites.

Quality Control & Productivity

  • Ensure all work is installed in accordance with project specifications, company standards, and quality expectations.
  • Monitor workmanship, installation quality, and project progress.
  • Support quality assurance and punch list completion efforts.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, workflow, prefabrication utilization, and field productivity.
  • Assist with resolving field conflicts, scheduling challenges, and coordination issues.

Workforce Development & Leadership

  • Mentor and develop Superintendents, Foremen, and field personnel.
  • Participate in hiring, onboarding, evaluations, and performance management of field staff.
  • Promote leadership development, accountability, teamwork, and employee engagement within field operations.
  • Support training initiatives related to safety, installation standards, and operational best practices.

Client & Stakeholder Relations

  • Maintain strong working relationships with general contractors, owners, inspectors, subcontractors, and project stakeholders.
  • Participate in project meetings, site walks, and coordination meetings as needed.
  • Represent the company professionally in the field and support strong customer satisfaction.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of field leadership experience in mechanical contracting, HVAC, plumbing, piping, or industrial construction.
  • Extensive experience managing large commercial or industrial mechanical construction projects.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, installation practices, construction sequencing, and field operations.
  • Proven leadership experience overseeing multiple projects and field teams simultaneously.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, schedules, and construction documents.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety practices.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage schedules, manpower, and operational priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience as a Superintendent, Senior Superintendent, or Operations Leader in mechanical construction.
  • Experience with prefabrication, modular construction, and BIM/VDC coordination preferred.
  • Journeyman trade background strongly preferred.
  • OSHA 30 certification preferred.
  • Experience in industrial, manufacturing, mission critical, or large commercial construction environments.
