Etsy is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the Ads Search Quality team. We are looking for people leaders who are product and delivery-driven, and are passionate about making ML innovations in digital advertising to help improve the Etsy buyer/seller experience.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone interested in building user-centric ML systems for a two-sided marketplace with 90+ million buyers, 5+ million sellers, and hundreds of millions of unique, handmade, vintage listings. Etsy sellers use Etsy ads for advertising their products and growing their business. Etsy Ads optimizes sellers’ budgets to advertise their listings in the places on Etsy where they perform best. The work on the Ads Search Quality team involves building machine learning systems to power the sponsored search product including retrieval, ranking, and user engagement modeling on Etsy.com and the Etsy app.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, Ads. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.
For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. What’s this team like at Etsy?
The Ads Search Quality team is a machine learning team in the Etsy Ads org that powers our promoted search product. We aim to increase the relevancy and user engagement for promoted results on Etsy.
We use lexical, graph, and neural retrieval models to increase relevance
We make the ad experience more personalized to a buyers journey and intent
We ensure that the ads put in front of the right buyers to increase buyer engagement
We maintain an ads funnel pipeline that scales for our 90+ million buyers and sellers
What does the day-to-day look like?
Work cross functionally with product, analytics, and engineering leadership to understand buyer and seller needs to drive technical solutions
Manage team of machine learning engineers and scientists through prototyping, optimizing, and implementing large-scale ML models and systems
Foster a collaborative and high-performing engineering culture on your team through mentorship, development practices, and career growth opportunities.
Work closely with other engineering teams to ensure alignment and integration with other services and platforms.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:
Master’s degree in computer science, engineering or a related technical field.
Proven experience in software engineering, with a strong background in search, information retrieval, or machine learning
2+ years of experience leading engineering teams, ideally experience with real-time large-scale search, ads, or recommendation systems.
Strong advocate for supporting and coaching your engineers through the challenges of developing ML and software at scale.
Deep knowledge of search algorithms, ranking models, relevance tuning, and natural language processing (NLP) techniques.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally; explain technical concepts to non-technical collaborators
Proven track record to drive product development from concept to delivery while maintaining a high standard of engineering excellence.
Ability to facilitate great technical decision-making across a broad technical stack, having passion for the technical aspects of your work, but a desire to let engineers drive the details.
