The EMEA Operations department supports MUFG’s core products and services including Banking (commercial/retail-based payments, loans, derivatives, trade finance) and Securities (Derivatives, FX, Fixed Income, Equity etc).  The role of Operations is to manage the interaction between Operations and MUFG’s internal clients (Front Office, Trading Desks etc) and has close ties with other support areas such as, Legal, Compliance, Risk etc

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE 

The main purpose of the role is to lead and direct the catalogue of product services for Markets and Securities Operations functions for MUFG Securities EMEA (MUSE), any affiliates supported by MUSE, and specified services provided to MUFG Bank Ltd by coordinating and executing strategic objectives set by the Pillar Head and Operations leadership.

The role requires excellent leadership skills and the ability to prioritise, coordinate, and execute a complex landscape of critical deliverables without issue that impact the operating model and financial targets to the Medium Term Business Plan for Operations.

The Product Services role is critical to carrying out strategic planning and implementation of Operations activities within MUFG Securities EMEA in accordance with the objectives set by the Pillar Head. This role requires the individual to plan for and mitigate risk as it relates to implementation of Operations strategy taking into consideration regulatory, operational, and people risk. The role requires the individual to drive and implement innovation opportunities by coordinating delivery of Technology solutions to add efficiency to the operating model and introduce key opportunities to enhance the value-add service to the Front Office through data analytics and MI while maintaining a robust control environment.

The role requires excellent internal/external stakeholder management, a strong track record of driving operational efficiency, ability to influence the culture for the department to build out a center of operational excellence utilising an outsourced operating model, sound logic and independence of thought with an understanding of the vision and ability to execute strategic change and prioritise the book of work so that deliverables are on time, requirements are robust and fit for purpose, and implementation occurs without incidents.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Planning and Change Management

  • Take steer from the Pillar Head to initiate the change agenda through execution of vision for the department in line with the overall Operations strategy
  • Direct and manage multiple initiatives simultaneously by leading and partnering with Project Managers. Prioritize deliverables for the department in conjunction with Technology in a manner that is commercially beneficial for the organization
  • Demand excellence of change delivery by ensuring requirements are appropriately captured, the operating model and system design is fit for purpose, and change is implemented without incidents or ongoing manual intervention required from Operations.
  • Coordinate and deliver key strategic objectives for both Operations and Front Office’s expansion strategy through oversight and leadership of team leads across the department.

Operational Management and Efficiency

  • Work with Pillar Head to set the strategic operational efficiency objectives for the department, make sure the objectives are well understood by key stakeholders and staff, and drive to implement the changes required.
  • Lead the department through outsourcing initiatives by creating a well-controlled operating model that continues to add value to the Front Office and MUFG clients in a cost-effective manner in line with the Medium Term Business Plan
  • Drive the use of data analytics and trend analysis across the department to positively impact the service offering to the Front Office by creating opportunities for real-time, data driven views of the way the business is operating. Provide regular feedback and reporting to the Front Office for ways to improve.
  • Represent Operations in the Front Office Counterparty Evaluation governance forum by providing trend analysis on securities fails and collateral disputes and continue to build out the data analytics offering from Operations in order to enhance the value proposition from the department.

Stakeholder Management

  • Hold staff and business partners accountable for their deliverables and set a standard of excellence that minimizes delays, ensures requirements are clearly defined, and costs are managed appropriately.
  • Work in partnership with Operations internationally to share best practices and align requirements for international deliverables
  • Build and market the Operations brand of excellence across the firm. Grow and continually improve the relationship between Operations and the Front Office. Grow and build a partnership between Operations and Technology that delivers process excellence across Operations tasks.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to maintain and improve service levels and deliver first class client experience ensuring effective inter-departmental collaboration

People Management

  • Identify key positions and persons and prioritise talent development across the department and ensure team leads are carrying out their duty as managers to engage staff through regular 1-2-1s and team meetings.
  • Lead the strategic learning and development objectives for the pillar by partnering with HR to both upskill staff to learn to use new systems that impact operational efficiency and create opportunities for staff to network and learn from peers and key business partners across the firm.
  • Partner with Procurement to  influence the commercials of contracts with 3rd party vendors to maintain consistency across vendor platforms and ensure benefits are fully realised by the pillar 
  • Influence staff based in London (MUSE/MUFG Bank) and India (External Vendor) and create a culturally inclusive, well controlled, operationally efficient environment by setting the standard for collaboration between staff across multiple locations.
  • Primary responsibility for relationship management and oversight of outsourced functions for Markets and Securities Operations Services, SoW coordination and periodic reviews in coordination with Procurement and Legal.

Culture and Vision

  • Help influence and execute the design of the strategy for the department by partnering with team leads and members of the wider Operations management team
  • Effectively incorporate messages and priorities from senior management, but ensure independence of thought and leadership is clearly visible.
  • Help to drive an inclusive, output-oriented culture through building agility, flexibility, creativity and engagement in an agile working environment
  • Create an environment of continual process improvement driving productivity, efficiency and quality.

Risk and Compliance

  • Meet regulatory, business and customer expectations in terms of accurate and timely processing by effectively manging incidents
  • Mitigate operational risk by helping to create and maintain a robust control environment, ensure high quality standard operating procedures are maintained for all functions, and access rights to all systems used by the department are well understood and regularly reviewed.
  • Monitor and evaluate operational incidents, identify route causes and implement control and process improvements to prevent a recurrence.

Area of Activity – Thorough understanding and oversight, and leadership of:

  • Planning and implementation of Location Strategy initiatives for the Pillar
  • Coordination and delivery of international initiatives for the Securities business under Unlocking Japan
  • Innovate and improve efficiency by engaging with Technology and third party Technology providers; Implement solutions without issue that fit into MUFG’s robust control environment with well-documented, fit for purpose requirements
  • Influence culture and vision for the department by engaging with new joiners and junior talent to ensure they are inducted into the firm well and have the opportunity to learn and network with leaders throughout MUFG
  • Manage and deliver the New Product Approval and Complex Transaction Committee processes for the Markets and Securities Operations by leading the teams to challenge appropriately, make sure new products are well understood across the pillar, ensure all risk factors are mitigated, ensure business requirements for new products are well documented and implemented, avoid implementation of manual processes, conditions are monitored effectively and ultimately closed, and build the relationship with the Front Office

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Strong understanding of a wide range of financial products and back office responsibilities
  • Strong track record of delivery of strategic projects and creating efficiencies for the department with management of complex requirements and process implementation
  • Experience in stakeholder management, building positive relationships, and making decisions with positive impact across functions
  • Experience of implementing and improving the operational control environment

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Functional / Technical Competencies:

  • Excellent communication skills, written, oral and listening
  • Strong stakeholder management techniques
  • Excellent understanding of Operational Risk and Control.
  • Strong understanding of the trade lifecycle management of various products and associated risks
  • Good working knowledge of the regulatory environment and upcoming changes
  • Understand the key elements of the front to back process flow including other infrastructure groups i.e. Market Risk, Credit Risk, Finance, Product Control, Legal, Compliance, etc.
  • Strong understanding of the project management lifecycle with experience of delivery both medium and large change projects/programmes

PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incorporate and align messages and priorities from senior management into this strategy as necessary.
  • Excellent leadership skills with an ability to inspire and develop leadership qualities in others
  • Solid judgment, strong negotiating skills, and a practical approach to implementation – including knowledge of Bank systems
