Job Summary:

To fill prescriptions, dispense medicines, and provide information to patients and other health practitioners regarding the nature and use of medications. To advise physicians and other health practitioners on the selection, dosage, interactions, and side effects of medications.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree or Pharm D from an accredited School of Pharmacy; experience cannot be substituted for educational requirement.

Completion of a pre-employment drug screen required.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:  Licensed as a pharmacist in Mississippi or eligible for licensure. Must be licensed prior to hire date.

Possession of a controlled substance license or eligible for licensure. Must be licensed prior to hire date.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of drugs and their indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, and proper administration.  Knowledge of policies and procedures pertaining to the disbursement of pharmaceutical drugs.  Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.  Verbal and written communication skills.  Interpersonal skills to interact with a wide range of constituencies.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and/or oversees the preparation and dispensing of prescription medications; assesses the identity, strength, and purity of medications.
  • Advises physicians and other health practitioners on drug indications/contraindications, dosage, drug interactions, and side effects; provides other drug and pharmaceutical information as appropriate.
  • Maintains records such as pharmacy files, patient profiles, inventories, and control records; maintains methods and manner of storage and recordkeeping systems to provide for safekeeping of pharmaceuticals.
  • Supervises, trains, monitors, and coordinates the activities of pharmacy technicians.
  • Oversees the acquisition and disbursement of drugs and medications to various locations.
  • Plans, implements, and maintains procedures for mixing, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals according to policy and legal requirements to ensure quality, security, and proper disposal.

Physical and Environmental Demands
Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, occasional exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
