The Role:

Medcan is recruiting for a Genetic Counsellor to join our innovative and high-volume Genetics program on a 13-month fixed-term contract to cover a parental leave. We are seeking a highly motivated and client-focused individual with a great attitude who is able to work both independently and as part of a team. This is an excellent opportunity work alongside of team of genetic counsellors, geneticists, and a genetic counselling assistant in a unique clinical setting focused on genetic testing for proactive health purposes.

The role includes counselling across a wide range of clinical areas, including hereditary cancer and cardiac risks, reproductive health, and pharmacogenomics. In addition, individual will also provide genetic counselling for individuals undergoing clinical whole genome sequencing for health optimization purposes. This is a full-time position that will require some Saturday coverage and onsite work; however some remote work can also be accommodated if desired.

The Accountabilities: 

  • Provide client-centred care as part of fast-paced, collaborative, and multidisciplinary team 
  • Provide genetic counselling to a healthy adult population on services, including (but not limited to): hereditary cancer, hereditary heart disease, pharmacogenomics, common complex disease, prenatal, and reproductive health indications 
  • Provide genetic counselling for individuals considering clinical whole genome sequencing for proactive health purposes 
  • Assess psychosocial issues and structure counselling session(s) accordingly 
  • Contribute to the interpretation of genetic and genomic test results and perform basic variant classification analysis 
  • Summarize risks, results, and recommendations in writing both in client letters and to their Medcan care team, and provide post-test genetic counselling on results 
  • Contribute to research processes and methodologies 
  • Function as a resource to other members of the Medcan team and to health care providers outside of Medcan, and as a liaison to the public  
  • Supervise Genetic Counselling students 
  • Coordinate with other clinic staff to ensure a great client experience 

The Requirements: 

  • Master of Science in Genetic Counselling from an accredited program 
  • Certification by the Canadian Association of Genetic Counselling (CAGC) and/or the American Board of Genetic Counsellors (ABGC) 
  • 2 or more years of experience as a genetic counsellor required; experience in an Ontario Ministry of Health-based clinic is an asset 
  • Professional knowledge of the rapidly changing principles and practice of medical, clinical and laboratory genetics 
  • Forward-thinking with a commitment to the advancement of genetics/genomics and genetic counselling services in the primary care setting 
  • Superior oral and written communication skills 
  • Superior critical thinking, organizational, time management, decision-making and continuous learning skills 
  • Demonstrated leadership and collaborative teamwork skills 
  • Highly developed computer skills and/or the ability to learn new computer programs 
  • French speaking, an asset 

This is a full-time 13-month fixed-term role with benefits. The role is scheduled during business hours Monday through Saturday and will start in December 2024.
