Retail Technology (RT) is responsible for the world leading application of technology and operations across every aspect of CommBank, from innovative product platforms for our customers to essential tools within our business. We also use technology to drive simplicity and better banking, an essential component of great customer service underpinning a strong emphasis on software development as a craft and the adoption of industry best engineering practices.

Retail Technology team is responsible for technology leadership and capability underpinning CommBank’s retail business.

The goal of Retail Technology Foundations is to ensure that RT is enabled by world-class people, process and technology.

Impact & contribution:

As a Principal Software Engineer within Retail Technology, you will be responsible for implementing the designs within your application to align to RT’s Architecture reference development.

Specifically, as a Principal Software Engineer, you are expected to develop solutions and guide design to drive outcomes across the Core Product Systems within RT. You are responsible for design analysis and the estimation process from Business Case, ideation, discovery and inception phases.

Roles & Responsibilities:

As a Principal Software Engineer, the primary purpose of the role is to lead, drive, promote, engineer and implement solutions. To drive and continuously improve the tools and process that automate the delivery of code through Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment pipelines which include the build, the testing and deployment capabilities of these pipelines.

  • Design and implement solution and specifications under Retail Technology – Consumer Finance
  • Lead high performing Engineering team
  • Ownership and governance of RT solution designs
  • Adopt a ‘Design to Run’ mentality to architect robust solutions that are fully supportable in a production environment
  • Provide developmental advice and consult for business case/ideation, discovery, inception and enhancement requests by examining current vs target architectures ensuring align with ES strategy and architecture standards
  • Collaborate with Solution Architecture and functional SME’s to prototype solutions to explore alternatives, seeking simple & standard solutions with a low cost of ownership
  • Collaborate with upstream and downstream system representatives to ensure an integrated end to end solution is delivered to achieve the desired outcomes
  • Proactively seek opportunities for continuous improvement of Core Product systems and data to leverage existing capabilities
  • Work with senior technical and business management teams in identifying issues of current state architecture, developing target state architecture with the ability to communicate the features and benefits
  • Effectively lead and influence business partners, peers, team members and vendors
  • Identifies and engages stakeholders, including architecture disciplines, asset owners, delivery owner, business stakeholders and SMEs to ensure architecture is optimal, and has the greatest chance of success
  • Effectively challenges business leaders to obtain the best technology solutions and fit with ES strategy
  • Non-Technical presentations
  • Continually learning modern technology best practices and bring them back to the group. Go above and beyond in improving quality and performance in the delivery of efficient, reliable and maintainable application and solutions that meet design and requirements specifications for technology projects.

Essential Skills:

  • 18+ years of hands-on experience in IT.
  • Significant design experience and experience in guiding design.
  • Significant experience in Banking domain.
  • Prior experience for Bank’s Tech modernization journey.
  • Proficiency in key capabilities–IT SDLC processes, written documentation/specification skills.
  • Experience in operating effectively as part of cross-functional teams.
  • Experience in modelling and communicating models as a means of articulating concepts in Architecture.
  • Experience in working across a number of technical domains with the ability to ‘deep dive’ and implement optimal solutions.
  • Worked on Retail banking on various digital platforms.
  • Monitoring and logging tools.
  • Customer and stakeholder management.
  • Technical leader who can be relied upon to develop and lead engineers.
  • Technical leadership of tools and technologies within capability (develop, build, test automation, deployment, monitoring & logging, or service management & orchestration) being specialized.
  • Strong understanding of application architecture.
  • Strong knowledge of software implementation best practices and object orientated design principles.
  • Excellent People management, leadership and communication skills.
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Ability to debug complex technical issues involving multiple system components.
  • Ability to work and participate in an agile (scrum) environment.
  • Passion for new technology, continuous learning, innovation, improvement and optimization.

Qualifications:

A degree in Computer Science or a related field
